Default Keeping facial area groomed? What are the best top knot bands?

I find myself cleaning Chloe's face a lot and redoing her top knot many times a day. All the bands that I have tried just don't hold in her hair. I have tried bands for little girls and orthodontic bands but the orthodontic bands I can't get them to double loop around my fingers and a single loop just doesn't stay in her hair. The bands for girls (which are also small) I can double loop but I feel if I could get it to loop one more time it would hold her hair better. Basically, her hair ends up in her eyes most of the time and I don't think that's comfortable for her at all.

What bands are the best for holding yorkie hair? I just think I haven't been buying the correct ones.. and how do you get it to loop around tight enough so it won't fall out when they shake their head?

I've used these bands for years. I put their hair up every morning & don't need to redo it until I cut them out at night. I forget the size (could figure it out if you're interested) but I know I use the thinnest ones. Very tiny but stretchy, I loop about 3-4 times to make the band very tight around the hair, but not tight pulling the hair.

Good luck!

I'm currently using rainbow loom bands and I used to use these
Bulk Basic Solutions Black Rubber Hair Ties, 500-ct. Packs at DollarTree.com

Both are very stretchy, I wrap them 2-3x. I usually do Lola's top knot once a day.

You might want to experiment with using different amounts of hair too.

Someone on here suggested the rubber bands that kids have been using to make stretchy bracelets. I got a package for about 2dollars and love them. So many different colors and easy to put in and remove at night.

I was looking at these but I was unsure if they're better than other bands I bought because these are $12 for only 100. What size do you buy and can you do the 3-4 loops around your finger easily? I'm thinking of ordering these.. And a top knot pillow because she just won't sit still, lol.

Yeah, I have tried these as well and they don't work for Chloe's hair so well They are still a little bit large for her hair, her hair isn't very thick on top of her head so even putting a bow in is difficult so I don't do it. If I put a bow it ends up falling down and hanging. I'm waiting for her hair to get longer because I can't make the top knot at the very top of her head
yet.. She still has shorter pieces closer to the middle of her head

I think it's 1000 not 100, so the price isn't too bad when you consider the quality. I believe I use the small 1/4" light size, but my girls have pretty thin hair. These bands are great because they're sooo lightweight & very stretchy. I can wrap them twice around my finger.

I wonder if you'd send the guy a stamped self-addressed envelope if he'd send you a few samples? He'll talk to you on the phone about the right size for your pup. Also, the special cheap little scissors works great for cutting them out. I'll explain how to use it if you're interested.

I have all sorts of other small bands but I won't use them.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for your advice. I didn't know that they come in a 1000 pack, that is much better deal than 100. Chloe's hair is thin on her head too so I think that size will work for her, too. Your girls are absolutely stunning, I love their long hair. When I tie Chloe's hair at bedtime, I wake up in the morning and her hair is all in her eyes because the band somehow comes off and I feel horrible. I'll be ordering the lainee bands today because they sound like they're much better than what I'm using. Do your girls stay still when you do their top knot or do you use a top knot pillow?

I heart this thread. All the helpful information will really be useful when Darla's hair gets long enough to need to do a top knot. I started grooming my dogs myself when I could never get any of the local groomers to leave my dog's top knot alone. They kept cutting the hair between the eyes so that I could never get a proper top knot grown out on my Tzus. It was frustrating so I went out and bought my own doggie grooming supplies and have done my own grooming ever since. I love doing my own hair so I know doing Darla's is gonna be a lot of fun once she gets used to it. BTW, I know that too many stickies make less space for member started threads but a sticky on all things grooming would be nice.

Oh, my girls love to have their topknot put in--they let me poke around & primp as much as needed. They also love having it taken out at night, & I rub their little heads. Their hair hangs loose at night which works fine because of the short cut the topknot. I know this shorter "spray" isn't everyone's favorite but it's certainly the easiest & most comfy for the dogs!

Ricky has thin hair. I started using rubber bands but they would get tangled and they pulled when I put them in. Someone suggested the little scrunchies and we haven't looked back since. He's a ton happier with them.

I have been buying my bands from Amazon for years now. They come in different sizes but I find the 1/4" ones work best for us. Usually 2 or 3 times around the topknot are plenty to hold it nicely. They are the exact bands my groomer uses.

Usually I do two bands on the topknot. One if front and one behind the first one. Then you place your bow between the two sections and it makes it very secure. Bows can be choking hazards so never leave your dog unattended when wearing a bow unless you are sure you secured it properly.

I tried to do that two bands technique before and it didn't really work out because her hair isn't thick enough for the second band to hold securely. I bought her A LOT of bows but I don't think I've gotten to use any of them, lol. I have decided to stick to bands for now because her hair is still growing. I'm going to try bows again when her top knot length is at the top of her head.

Also, thank you everyone for the band suggestions! I have tried all of the types suggested and they all turned out to be too big or just didn't work out.. Especially orthodontic bands, I couldn't even get them to loop twice. Loom bands are really cheap and come in nice colors too but they are big. I basically have a whole big bag of bands that are not working, lol.

I ordered the lainee bands since I haven't given those a try and they are pretty popular.. Hopefully these will end up being stretchy enough to make a secure loop! I ordered the size small 1/4".. I'll update when I receive them

I agree that the two band method works better on a more mature growth of hair. Placing your band closer to the eyes until the small hair growth grows out will help keep some of it out of the eyes.

Just try to avoid the rubber bands because the little hairs break off much more easily when you use those. You want a smooth surface on the band that won't catch those little hairs and break them off and make sure you redo the topknot often. Leaving a topknot in gives the band a chance to shift around and break the hair. It can be so frustrating trying to grow those hairs out!
