| Trick Training Gone Wrong I had a little down time last night and Max was busy flipping over his food bowl begging for more to eat (about 1/2 hour after he ate) so I thought it was a good opportunity for some training. I also just finished watching a video of a dog "play dead" which I thought was adorable. I brought out a little cup of food to the living room and proceeded to shoot Max with my fake finger gun. "BANG!!!" I yelled and pushed him down to a laying position with his head sideways on the floor. "BANG!!!" I did it about 15 times and he almost got it! "BANG!!!" He started rolling over a little bit instead, so we kept at it. "BANG!!!" 20 minutes later I realized Cooper was not around. I called him and he didn't come. Off I searched for Cooper. He was sitting in my bedroom closet shaking!! He was scared to death of the noise I was making! Poor Cooper. I guess Max isn't going to be learning to play dead anymore

| Lol, awww, poor Cooper. You could just say 'play dead' -- of course the 'bang' is so much cuter, but you could just use the words 'play dead' as to not worry Cooper.

| Or just speak the word "Bang" without yelling. My Tibbe will boycott me if I yell in a way he doesn't like!!!

| I can change it up a little bit. Maybe it'll be a trick for cooper too. When I say Bang he runs and hides and Max plays dead!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Awwwwwwww, lol, poor Cooper...little dude is sensitive! Maybe he thought "bang" was said like in the same tone as "no" or something...? Time for trick idea #2 for Max .

| Max will do anything for food. He can sit, lay, stay, give paw and rollover. I figured play dead was the next one. I'll do a quieter bang. If I can train him to start barking that would really be great!

aww poor Cooper. You'll have to be quieter..lol I've been teaching Caleb 'dead' too. I get him to do down first, then say 'dead' and lay him on his side. My Border collie kept running too his bed when I did it, seems 'dead' sounds too much like 'bed'. All my past dogs have played dead, I always taught them with the word 'dead' while making the gun motion. Eventually we just had too do the gun motion. I expect Cooper would prefer that, in time. lol. Today hubby said we're having 'fish' and Ish (Ishmael - border collie) came running thinking he was being called. It surprising how many words start or end in Ish, poor thing gets so confused. Extra hugs for Cooper. p.s You probably do this already, but I just thought I'd add.. When teaching a new trick to our dogs, we always do it only a couple of times, in between tricks they know, so they feel confident, and get lots of praise for doing things right. It also stops them being bored with repetitiveness. Let us know how you do......any pic?

| We tried training a little last night and I use a quieter BANG. Cooper sat with us but he still did not like it that much. The funny part is that when I trained Cooper to smile, I used to point at him and say "smile". Now when I point my finger gun at him and say BANG, he smiles. So I have one rolling over and the other smiling when they play dead. What a mess we are! LOL thanks.
