How old was your yorkie at the first grooming app? Wrigley is 4 months and looking a little shabby. I'm wondering if he's too young for a cut? Thanks.

OK...let me elaborate on my previous statement. She was 14 weeks the first time she was groomed, but the groomer came to the house, she didn't go out. (We mostly use a lady that travels to groom.

| I remember I talked to the groomer (she comes to the vet's place twice a week and I happened to be there one day that she was) and she said to bring Tatum in around 4-6 months for her first grooming. Well, Tatum did so well for me with nail clipping and feminine area trimming that I just didn't need to. Her hair was real silky too so it just laid down real nice. I don't think she had her first official grooming with this lady until almost a year old. She's not so good for me anymore with the nail trimming but I still do the paw pad trimming and feminine/hiney trimming (with a little buzz clipper) so she doesn't go very often at all. She's been professionally groomed now twice that I can think of off-hand and she'll be two years in February. Our poodle had to go every 4-5 months or so though because he got all gremlin-like bushy. I guess since Tatum's hair lays down, it's not so hard. But I don't trust myself to trim any other areas on Tatum!

I don't think a puppy is ever too young to be groomed or trimmed a little -- but they should be through with all their shots before they visit a groomer. I have trimmed my little guy since I got him. He had such yucky baby hair that it had to be removed as soon as possible. I am not talking about "normal baby hair." His was so bad (and matted) that you couldn't have combed him or brushed him in a million years without hurting him a lot. Now at four months with most of his baby hair gone - his new coat coming in is much more manageable. Actually it's wonderful! And - boy does his hair grow fast!!! My pup (at four months) gets his last shots tomorrow. This means he will be able to visit a groomer - but he's looking so great and doesn't need to go. As long as I keep him in a puppy cut - I can do this myself. This does mean that I'll also have to remove the hair from inside his ears and clip his nails --which I can do. I have had several small dogs - and only do the anal glands - if and when needed...at the vet's office. My other small dogs needed this done about once a year or even less. I started out with my first dog having it done routinely at the groomer's --but it hurt my dog so much I wondered why I was doing it - and wondered if she needed it done that often. I learned, without doing it so often, that she rarely had any problem. It is, however, a constant problem with my daughter's dog. My vet said it is a problem that is more prevelant with some dogs than others. So - treat accordingly! Good luck! Carol Jean

Poor neglected Shelby (9 months) still hasn't been and b/c of the posts I read here she may never get to go I am soooo scared that someone will mess her up. So far, with help of YT members I am learning to do it a little at a time myself. I want her coat to grow out, just so I can see what she looks like. I have to find a trusted groomer before she will ever get a puppy cut.

Don't be afraid to go to a groomer. Take a picture with you. And, if the cut isn't what you wanted, go over your concerns with the groomer before you leave. Please be prepared (just like all of us) ---your puppy's haircut will probably be a little shorter than you might want it when you first have it done. And - it will last longer this way. My puppy's hair grows very fast! If after a couple of visits, you and your groomer can't get together on what you want - try another groomer. If you're not interested in grooming your dog yourself - you might as well get out there and get started finding a groomer that you like. After all, you are going to have your little pup for a long long time. A couple "too-short" haircuts are going to be the end of the world. PS: With my Bichon - he always looks a little better a couple weeks after he's groomed.......but before I know it - he needs to go back again. I've learned that his haircuts that are a little too short aren't so bad after all. Carol Jean
