| Parastar Plus...anyone use? Sentinel Spectrum? After pulling 6 deer tick off of Lilah in 12 hours (and one off of me) I have got to find something that will work on these evil demon creatures Spoke with 2 vets.... Vet #1 said to do the Parastar Plus topical and the Sentinel Spectrum (for HW prevention) or even the regular Sentinel if I prefer Vet #2 said to keep them on Revolution (what they are on now), and use a flea collar (NOT going to do that bc I don't like those around my younger kids) OR do the Revolution and also apply Parastar Plus for the next 2 months while the ticks are blooming. I'm not sure what to do! Both Lilah and Magnolia are getting spayed tomorrow so I'm holding off on medications until next week (they were due for a dose of Revolution on 4/1 but the vet was out of stock at the time).....my other dog got her meds on 3/14 so I'll just dose all of them on 4/14 to make it easier to remember. Anyway, I have until then to decide which path to take A couple of concerns I have: --Is using Revolution and Parastar Plus overkill? --Is a topical HW med as effective as oral? And what if they won't chew the oral (vet said it has to be chewed not just swallowed) Any input/experience would be appreciated! Thanks |

| I have never heard that Sentinel must be chewed. On their website, they say it is "chewable," but not that it must be chewed. Topicals can be just as effective as orals ... provided they are applied correctly.

| I just switched back to Sentinel and I remember asking the vet a long time ago if it worked if they didn't chew it (I have to hide it or they spit it out). He said it worked even if they didn't chew it. |

| hmmm, the vet today said the chewable version had to be chewed (or at least broken up into pieces).....the pill version doesn't have to be chewed. It also says that on Heartguard's info. I wonder if the effectiveness is altered if it is not chewed |

| This is taken directly from a package insert of Sentinel which I have right here in front of me: How Supplied: SENTINEL Flavor Tabs are available in four tablet sizes. Also .... "To insure adequate absorption, always administer Sentinel Flavor Tabs to dogs immediately after or in conjunction with a normal meal." So there you have it, straight from Novartis. Sentinel comes in tablet form, and there is NO mention by the manufacturer that it MUST be chewed to be effective, just that it be given after a meal. I have never used Sentinel Spectrum, but according to Novartis' website it is supplied as a chew, not a tablet. And they also say: "Dose must be given with a full meal, either within food or immediately afterwards (to allow effective absorption of lufenuron)." I'm just guessing here, but I suspect that it is like a heartguard chew where the medication is not evenly distributed throughout the chew so you can't split it and your dog must consume the entire chew. But nowhere on their website does it say that either MUST be chewed to be effective.

| Thanks! The vet was going to give me the Sentinel Spectrum......I didn't get a chance to look at the insert in it, but you are right, I don't see anywhere on their website where it indicates it must be chewed. Still, if I decide to use that I'll probably break it up just to make sure I'm not taking any risks with it not being absorbed fully. Quote:
