| Yappy yorkie!! Hi All! I have a year old yorkie female named Lexi I walked her all last spring and fall but during the winter we didn't go on walks because we live in canada and the winter was way too cold for her little feet . Since the weather has been warmer I started walking her again and every dog and person she sees she barks non stop. Another dog lives with us, and at my old house there was a dog, and our neighbourhood was full of dogs and she was perfect! She seems to have gotten yappy over the winter and I don't know how to correct this behaviour. It's not only on walks but every dog we see or person she barks. Help!! |

| can you get her into a class? I would try to keep her from being able to practice the unwanted behavior because the more she practices, the more it becomes a habit. If you are walking towards someone and she starts to bark (and even before if you can) just turn and walk the other way. Maybe distract her with food if she is food motivated and if she is, just offer the food as you walk by and see if you can distract her that way. I have one that I'm working with now and when we come out in the morning, she wants to bark and generally annoy the other dogs (and probably my neighbors too), I have put her on a leash and the minute she starts barking, I say ut oh and put her right in the garage for about 30 seconds then let her out and if she barks again, I repeat it. She is getting the hand of it, I only have to do it once now and I'm hoping in a day or two, it will be behind us. Good luck! |

| Great advice above. Max found his voice around that age. Exercise and practice, being challenged on a regular basis, helps a lot.

| I have the same problem, except its inside at the kitties. For some reason it's getting worse and I'm about to go crazy. I was thinking of puppy classes, which I will still do, but I don't think it will help me as there are no cats there :-( I have tried everything under the sun and that is the one command he refuses to take too :-( I think maybe yours will get better as she is out and about. It sounds like she might have a bit of cabin fever and is really excited to say hi :-) good luck with yours, I don't have any advice there other than to try to redirect her attention. Maybe have a favorite toy that she gets rewarded with if she doesn't bark, or a treat when you come out and she doesn't bark. Hopefully eventually she will be more focused on the treat she will eventually get instead of what's going on around her :-) |

| What a good discussion! Lilah found her bark recently as well and oh my goodness. I use a stern "no" an withdraw my attention but I wonder sometimes if my no ends up being a response to ghe bark and could antagonize or affirm her barking...? It does seem to be getting better so I think she is understanding that the behavior is undesirable. She has gained kitty control for the most part but new people (people she knows but who don't live inside our home) arriving is a really tough one- I understand an acknowledgment of their arrival but come on lilah- they have been here for ten minutes! Glad to hear others training tactics.
