| Adding another dog? Morning Everyone! Little Teddy is now almost a year old and still full of energy and fun. Walks are of course his favorite thing to do and he gets so excited seeing other dogs thinking they are all his best friend and that they want to play with him. Obviously we watch him and steer him away from most other dogs but there are a few on our route that are excited to see him. Now we are wondering if getting another dog would be a good thing or would he be hurt seeing them get attention that has always been his..or even jealous. Have heard it is always best if getting another dog to get one close in age and one of the opposite gender. Your thoughts please! |

| Hello, im also new on here but i just want to give you my opinion. I believe that if you only have one dog they require a lot of attention from you when i had my first puppy i would take him everywhere i could with me didnt want him to feel lonly or suffer from seperation anxiety until i brought another puppy to keep him campany and to play with eachother. Now there both almost 2 and the best of friend!!! Good luck in your decision!!!

| I have 2 boys, brothers from different litters, and they love each other. We do have silly jealousy issues -- Max will bark if we are babying Teddy too much -- but I think it is a goofy game they have devised. As soon as we put Teddy back on the floor, Max stops barking. Although Max loved Teddy from the start, he wouldn't allow Teddy to sleep in my bed for about 3 months. They love playing fetch together, and they walk cheek to cheek. Best wishes in making your decision!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I have a different point of view to I think what many here have. I would never get another dog, to just be company to the one I do have. I should be enough company for the dog that I do own, even if that means sometimes I hire dog walkers, or he goes to a doggy play spa date etc. I would get another dog, because I wanted the love of another dog. The opportunity to train with and bond with another dog. In terms of same sex or different sex for the new addition, I think the most important thing is to understand the temperament of the dog that you do have. How social is he? How dog aggressive People aggressive, is he already trained - house broken, knows sit, down, stay, leave it, walks easy on the lead, etc. Two neutered males can co-exist quite comfortably unless both are very very dominant in personality. One neutered male, and one spayed female also can co-exist peacefully (usually).

We often say that life would have been easier with just one dog, but we wouldn't have missed having Teddy for the world. We have such a special bond with Teddy. At the same time, he is good for Max because we do not have much opportunity to socialize with other dogs. Very good point about disposition when it comes to choosing a second dog. While I would characterize both of my boys as strong/dominant personalities, Teddy does recognize Max as the leader.

I have a boy and a girl. About a year apart (Magnus is older). They're not best of friends but will act as a pack when they see fit. I really think it has to do with the dogs' character/personality. While Zoey doesn't care for anyone (human or dog) other than our family, Magnus is more interested in humans in general rather than other dogs. Although I absolutely LOVE having Zoey in our family, it didn't really turn out the way I expected. Which was hoping that they'd entertain/play with each other when left alone. But they sure are fun to watch when they are playing. LOL | |

| Adding Another Dog? Thanks everyone for your replies! They were most helpful and I so appreciate your honesty in giving your opinions. Teddy is the most sociable creature so much so that he forgets his manners which we will soon be getting him re-trained at a local obedience class. If I am walking him and he sees or hears another person or dog he immediately trys to run that direction to say hi. Needless to say we are not allowing him to do that. Some people and dogs actually hate dogs and want no part of them which is certainly an okay thing with us and we respect their feelings. At this point we probably will not get another dog just yet since I think I was falling into that "friend for my dog to entertain him" mode. When I come home from work...some days at my age of 65 I am mentally burnt out and the last thing I want to do is play......but dear Teddy immediately brings whatever toy is closest to play. He is not alone during the day ....my husband is home full time with him and they play alot and take walks when the weather allows. When I come thru the door however I am a new person to play with. Again thanks to all of you for your words of wisdom! |

| We had Samson for less than a year when we decided to get Harley, both are neutered, while Harley was more A type when we got him (even though he was like 2 lbs). They worked out their differences. They are inseparable now, sleep together, play together, Harley is very protective if my mother's dog covers over but not in an aggressive way just barks. We later (4 years later) adopted a female pitbull into our family. They all get along wonderfully, it really is how you transition dogs into your home, behaviors you allow. I can imagine my life without any of my dogs.
