| Yorkie in a bike basket training help I want my yorkie to ride in my bike basket. I tried putting him in without the bike moving and he cried. He is highly treat motivated, but when he's scared treats don't work for training. Has anyone done this? Any tips? |

| hi welcome to YT, first off how old is your pup, and what type of basket are you using. Make sure you have him tethered in. Mine has a cage over the basket which I think is the best, but they are getting hard to find. One of the first times I took Lola out, she manged to push through the cage, one of the bars was broken and I did not know it. I was lucky she did not get hurt. But now she seems to love it, most dogs love the wind in their face and looking around. In the last two summers we have logged well over 500 miles together. The best is to roll him around in it on the driveway or someplace safe, then take a short ride. Hopefully you feel comfortable on a bike, some dogs especially if they are a little heavy and move around in the basket can knock you off balance. Once you get the hang of it, it is great. Some of our rides are well over an hour, we even rode on a trail about 20 miles to Niagara Falls. In the picture I have the cage top pulled back off the basket, but it gives you and idea of the style we have, I also put a small blanket on the bottom of it, so it is comfortable.

| A lady in Lola's puppy class had that basket, she had to duct tape the entire top edge. I'm not sure why or how old the basket was. It was a nice basket and her puppy liked it. |

My husband and I like to bike ride and I know we do it much more since we can bring Lola along, I highly recommend this activity, as long as your pup is securely attached to the basket. Also I think you need to be a fairly confident bike rider, so if you have not ridden in quite some years practice a bit on your own first, also make sure your bike is properly sized so if you have a problem with your dog you can easily stop and get off the bike without falling.

That basket is not exactly the same but close, I believe mine is bigger and definitely deeper. Pay attention to the depth because if you roll over a bump or go down hill or move suddenly your dog can be raised up in the air a little and he could hit into the cage. When I get into a spot where I know there is a chance for her getting jostled I will reach a hand into the cage and sort of hold her down. I have found dirt trail riding not to be the best for the dog, because they get bumped around a lot in the basket. Lola starts acting very concerned when we get in areas that are not paved and a bit rough, also be wary of riding on trails with loose gravel or sand over them you could easily skid. LOL I am much more careful when riding with my precious cargo aboard.
