| How to get out mats and tangles? Chloe has been itching herself lately and that itching has caused her hair to mat REALLY BAD on her legs. Her body is fine.. It's just the legs that I am not able to brush or comb.. Or anything. It's matted up right next to the roots. When I try to comb it out all that happens is it puffs out and is super dry. She has silky hair on her body so this puffed out and tangled mess on her legs is bothering me. How do I brush all of this out? Do I need to brush her while she is in the bath with conditioner on? I feel really bad that it's probably my fault too because after her last bath she didn't let me brush her hair properly.. And now it's matted

| Puppy hair tends to mat more & easily...If it's to the skin, the best thing to do now is to just cut it off. It will grow & you can pay more attention to the places she tends to mat. You don't want to associate grooming time as ouch time right now. Have you tried spraying a detangling/ conditioning spray directly on the mat? That will help loosen it. You can use a thinning shear or a blunt nosed scissor, snip once closest to the skin & it will help loosen the mat too. Then you can try & brush it out. What I do is line brush, take the leg hair & lift them up. Brush downwards in layers working your way up. Brushing this way will ensure that all the hairs are smoothed & all tangles are brushed out. If you encounter a tangle that the brush will not work out, spray it, use the fine side of a comb & pinch the hair closest to the skin & comb out the tangle. If your fur baby wiggles too much, give her & yourself a little break & try again. End the grooming sessions w/ lots of kisses & praises when she's good.

| Coconut oil works wonders. The only downside is you'll have a puppy tongue in your way lol. I wasn't brushing Lola's legs well enough and a good bit of hair was matted down to the skin, I saturated it with coconut oil and worked it out with a rat tail comb. It actually came out easily. |

| If it is really bad combing it out could really hurt her and it would be better to shave it down and start fresh. Have you stopped the itching or figured out what is causing it?

| After trying many different things the best thing that worked for me was cutting into the mat a couple of times with thinning shears at different angles and then gently working it out with a slicker brush. The thinning shears would cut some hair but not all of it so my pups wouldn't have a bald spot.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I tried everything under the sun to get out Galen's mats. The best thing you can do is to cut it out. Be very careful using scissors next to the skin. I would suggest to cut into the mat and then Ryan to loose it up with your fingers. If not try it again cutting away part of the mat. And then with your fingers try to loosen it again.

| I attempted to untangle her hair last night, it took me an hour and a half but I managed to untangle her butt and back legs.. Pheww.. That was a lot of work lol. I wet it with shampoo and water first and rinsed that out then brushed her when she fell asleep. I used a little comb that I have which is double sided and has a flea comb on the other side. Some hair did come out but I don't think those pieces would untangle because they were too knotted up. When you untangle your babies does some hair come out as well.. Or was I just doing it wrong?

It's been along time since my 3 were puppies but when they were I set out to create a grooming environment where they felt safe and secure. This also transitioned to going to the groomer. My best advice for grooming is to have a routine which includes an area that you always use to groom. I like to use my laundry room and the top of my washer. Others have grooming tables. My point is to train your puppy early on that this is where you brush, comb, groom etc. as not on your lap. It really only takes a few minutes daily to brush out a coat well and address tangles if they are willing to stand still. You will never be able to accomplish this well otherwise. A really good comb is #2 for their face and those occasional knots http://www.toplinepet.com/combs.php
