| My 2 yr old Yorkie gained a pound? My Yorkie was 5 pounds at 18 months, he is now 2 yr 9 mths old, and has gained a pound to 6 pounds. I wouldnt worry, except for his belly is really budgy and round! And larger than his chest by far, and I don't see his ribs at all. I wonder if I am feeding him too much (1/4 cup dog food and chicken mix w/ lots of veg's) twice a day. With the extra vegetables it will be a lot more than 1/4 cup. Any suggestions?? I don't want this little guy to be unhealthy! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I would start with a vet check to assess health, especially if his belly is protruding beyond the size of his chest. Normally weight gain is distributed throughout the body. Another concern is that the added chicken and veggies is creating an imbalance in the nutrients he is taking in. Dogs have more specific needs than humans when it comes to a balanced diet. Keep us updated.

| It could be the quality of the dog food, some are higher in fat that others. Mine get 1/4 cups in the am andpm along with a little wet food in the pm. During the day they get a carrot each and sometimes a little piece of cheese. When they go to the vet and have gained weight I know my husband has been falling prey to the "daddy, we are starving to death". Sad eyes and has been giving them extra treats and needs to stop or I will make him take them to the vet and let him listen to the lecture. It could also be lack of exercise. We have had a very bad winter here at the jersey shore. It has only been lately that I have been able to take mine to the little dog park in Oceanport. There are many beaches that allow dogs until the start of the season. Asbury park has a dog beach up at the north end and Manasquan has an all year dog beach. Welcome to YT, neighbor.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I agree with all the other posters: 1) take to the vet first - get their assessment ruling out any health issues that might create this weight gain - including thyroid disease. Then exercise and measured food control are your most important defense against obesity in dogs. BTW it is quite common to see weight gain after neutering. Not necessarily immediately, but it kind of sneaks up on you. 6mths to one yr later, your dog is up 1/2lb or even 1lb.

| I would also check with your vet. My pup gained noticeably more when he turned two but it didn't make his belly big. |
