| Potty training older dog Hi, as I have told some, I adopted an older dog who has been in more then one home since leaving her original mom [who is very sick]. I have her crate but feel it is cruel to keep her in there when I am out because she has no access to food or water and is so confined. However, if I let her roam free she goes potty whereever she wants when unsupervised. I confined her to a large tiled floor bathroom with food water and wee wee pad, however when she hears me leave or come home she jumps to try to get over the short gate/box I put in the doorway and I noticed today she was having trouble with her back legs. I totally freaked and felt like giving up. She wouldn't eat or drink... I had to break out some wet 'junk' dog food to mix in with her dry food and she ate a little bit of it and drank. She did not even want to play. She is doing a little better now. If it continues I am taking her to the vet. I don't know what I can do to keep her safe when I am not home for a few hours. Crating her seems very cruel. She sleeps with me at night. |

| Have you thought of trying a play pen? They are larger than crates and you can put them in the living room. This way she can be in the middle of the action. It will be much easier to potty train her if you have a way to confine her.

I would def palpate her legs all over and move them around to see if there are sore spots/tenderness.

| it is not a gate blocking the doorway .. rather I put boxes there so she would not get caught in a gate. Her crate is metal and I am afraid she can hurt herself on that as well... so I put padded mat near doorway to the bathroom where I am keeping her when I go out which is three times the size of her crate. She is walking around ok... stretching her legs ok... she just has a terrible case of separation anxiey and she gets nervous over everything. I am very gentle with her... Here is an example: she did wee wee where she was not supposed to... I did not scold her because I had just come home and she was happy to see me... Still she was shaking as I cleaned it up. I have NEVER hit her or yelled at her or snapped a paper near her.... never... I do not believe in abusing animals and treat her with respect. I do say "no no" and "bad behavior" .... I don't want to give up....but it is so hard to know what to do. |
