Default I really need some spaying advice!!

I dropped Ellie off this morning at the vet to be spayed and I am a nervous wreck! I have cried all morning and I am just ready for it to be over with! this is the first time she has ever been put to sleep or had stitches or anything of that sort. I have seen many people say onesies are the best for after surgery so I have plenty of those for her, but is there anything else I need to be prepared for or know after surgery? And for those that their babies sleep in the bed with them, did they sleep with you that night? If so, how did they get off the bed if they had to potty during the night? During the day while I am at school, do I need to put her in a kennel so she can't move around to much? Or will she be fine in her room? Sorry I have so many questions! I have talked to the vet about some and of course I will talk to him more when I go to pick her up, but I figured with all the experience on here I could get a lot of good advice!!

p.s. I think Ellie knew something was up this morning. Just look at that pitiful face!

Aww..she is adorable. I am sure it will go well & I would kennel her just so she doesn't get hurt while you are away.

Trixie would not wear the cone...I took off time from work to stay with her several days then had my daughter watch her. She sleeps with us and can't get off the bed anyway. She just growls when she needs to go potty.

I am sure your baby will be fine.

I bet she will do great - but I totally understand all the worry - been there!

As far as what to do when you pick her up/aftercare -- make SURE you go home w/ pain meds -AND- always make sure you ask your vet what you should do if it seems her pain is not being managed / she is in too much pain. Oftentimes, vets will give you an alternate dosage plan if/when pain is not managed properly. Remember, this is abdominal surgery, which is no small thing, and it hurts...so make sure you have a plan.

That said, it's usually shocking just how fast they snap back! You'll want to make sure she isn't running all over the place or being too rambunctious - so yes, make sure she's confined a small, safe place when you're not home.

As far as sleeping in bed - mine all sleep w/ us and we have little doggie stairs so they can get up and down safely.

Keep us posted on how she does, and I hope it all goes well!

Thank you so much! I am worried about the kennel situation. Ellie has never been kennel trained. We attempted but she hated it so much I was worried she would hurt herself in it. Do you think she will be different in it after surgery?

She might be ok (mentally) in a crate while on pain meds. I would watch her very carefully if she is not used to being crated because they sometimes get very nervous or anxious. Wish you could stay home with her for a few days while she recovers. Or even have someone dog sit for you. I'm sure she will do fine so try not to worry to much. Most of the time they sleep a lot for the first few days. Keep us posted!

I picked her up this afternoon and she is doing great! She has acted fine and has had no sickness. She has ate a third of what she normally eats and I have been giving her little bowls of water every thirty or forty minutes. She has not seemed to be in any pain and after surgery she was given a 24 hour pain shot so she didn't come home with any pain medicine. She has internal stitches so you can't see them and she was layered back together. She has done so much better than I could have hoped for!

Awesome. On Cook's spay she could not keep any food down that day, but was great the next. She also peed in her bed either the first or second night, which she has never done otherwise.

it's amazing how quickly they recover, in a day or so she will be zooming around the house, you will have to control this, and no jumping up and down from bed or sofa. I wouldn't let her sleep with you for several days, put her bed next to yours. I would also confine her to a small area if she's not crate trained, just to limit the amount of area she has when left alone. They are truly amazing when surgery has been performed, so you shouldn't give her to much space for running or jumping. Spaying her is the best thing you did for her health and a long life with you. She looks sooo sad in the pic, she is sooooo adorable. Please keep us posted as how she is coming along.

I tried onsies with my Gizmo, but he kept peeing in them, so I tried one of the inflatable collars and it worked amazing !! Within about 20 mins he didn't even act like he had it on, but it did limit his movement and he could not lick with it. If the onsies don't work it's something to keep in mind :-)

Happy to hear Ellie is doing fine! Inspect the area while it's healing to make sure there is no inflammation, oozing, etc. There may be bruising and slight swelling but nothing "angry" looking. The most difficult part for us was keeping activity on low speed for 7-10 days.

Hope Ellie will have a swift and easy recovery!

The first day can be tough, but after that it wasn't too bad other than my girl getting cabin fever and wanting to run and jump when I had to confine her to the bedroom where she couldn't make big jumps onto furniture (still tried to climb up on the baby gate though).

That was one thing I loved about the inflatable collar. It was like as soon as it went on, he went into best behavior and just took it easy :-) yet he could still eat, potty, play with chew toys and such, but it kept him from running and jumping :-)
