| Hiking leg and getting pee on himself It's a wonderful issue Pilot is a hiker, he loves to hike his leg as high as possible to pee. He gets urine on his back legs, his front legs, his chest and his skirt. I don't know what to do. It makes him smell like pee and when he gets on your lap and makes your clothes wet with pee, it's just not pleasant. Anyone have this issue or know a solution to it. Right now I keep his skirt short and it helps, but doesn't prevent it.

| Do you trim the hair short on the very tip his penis? I keep that hair very short on Tibbe and clip is each week or so. Also if that hair isn't kept very clean, the hairs can clump together and harden and partially block or misdirect the urine flow I would imagine. If urine is spraying out in odd directions, it also sounds as if something could be in or near the opening of the urethra to cause the spray to be misdirected or the urethra is just malformed near the opening. There could be a tiny cyst growling or stone lodged in the urethra close or near the opening that is causing this unwanted effect. Maybe you could let the vet check his urethra just to be sure all is normal.

| Hee hee!!! Harry's a hiker too....but I keep him in a puppy-cut so it's really not a problem for us....however, it must be a bit of a stinky nightmare for you!!! I THINK (but please don't quote me on this ) that a lot of YT-ers keep a 'pee-pee line' on their little boy's 'winkie-woos' (if you get my drift?!!!!? ). I hate to add - Harry sometimes hikes so high that he actually topples over - it shouldn't be funny, but it really is....!!!

Sally, I've always wanted to ask the forum if the "pee-pee line" doesn't smell since it must retain some urine in the long hairs. I keep Tibbe's penis hairs cut ultra short and he doesn't gather any significant residue on it but worried long hairs would stink and look yellowed hanging down a ways. Do those that use the "line" wash it daily, I wonder? Thankfully, Tibbe usually squats but occasionally he will slightly hike up one leg an inch or so but as he doesn't pee on a tree or anything vertical but just on the grass underneath him, the hiking is just instinct that kicks in at times. He only seems to hike if Rusty, his male Corgi buddy, is out next door or the little male Yorkie across the alley is outside. Otherwise, he squats like a girl!

| Teddy is also a member of this club...he still pees on his front legs when he's hiking...ugh! I have tried taking him out more frequently so his stream isn't so high pressure from emptying a full bladder but that didn't really help much. I do notice that he "gets less distance" with his urine (so it doesn't end up hitting his legs) in the mid/later parts of our walks after his first big main pee but that's not useful info for short potty breaks. One thing that I have found that helps is if I guide him to a tree or bush which gives him something to block the flow of urine (besides his leg/foot). Mostly, we end up just taking note of which foot he peed on and clean it off when we get inside I also recommend keeping the body hair pretty short for easier clean up. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | My Marcel is a hiker too, and can get pee on him. What you have to do is experiment with the length of his pee string (the hair that is on the penis and extends from it, forward). Some dogs do better w/ very, very short pee strings - others do much better w/ long pee strings. Try different lengths and see how it goes.

| Oh yes, Pilot gets manscaped, haha. We trim it as short as I'm comfortable getting it. We've talked to the vet before and she says it's just him being him, he is full throttle and his urine stream is no less. I think I may try baby wipes and wipe him off when we bring him in.

I'm not sure if this would be a solution but I've heard of some people leaving a "pee string" helps their pups... contain(for the lack of better word) the pee direction. I keep both Magnus/Zoey in puppy cuts and always have their private areas trimmed so I haven't run into this sort of issue. | |

| I thought my Yogi was the only one who did this! I just keep baby wipes and wipe the back of his front legs when he does this. That's the part that gets wet. |

| When your groomer grooms him tell her to leave a pee string so the pee goes downward

| Gunner belongs to this club and he is still a youngster. I HATE it! He pees all over his beautiful white coat (he is a parti) and smells awful. And, if I don't hose him down in the sink (tried the wipes) he always smells. What is a momma to do? Well... come summer, all that beautiful coat is coming off!

| I was having this same problem with Toto. He has a pee string, and that wasn't the problem. The problem was his long hair from his saddle (back) hanging down in front of the stream and him getting dirty. Here is my thread on that. I ended up using hairdresser's clips to clip his hair out the way before we go out and it has helped. I keep the clips on the end of his leash so I remember to use them every time. It has helped a lot. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...u-kristen.html
