| A Gus and Gertie update It has been several months since I joined YorkieTalk and I've just been so busy taking care of Gus and Gertie (now 6 months old) that I have not had time to read the threads or to post. So here is an update and a few questions. 1. Gus and Gertie were neutered and spayed 10 days ago. Gus did just fine but at the very end of Gertie's surgery she had a cardiac arrest. She was successfully brought back by our very wonderful vet and his nurse. She had been intubated already and already had an IV so they were able to quickly give the correct drugs. She was very weak and sleepy when we brought her home. Gus took over and fussed over her the entire time. I slept on the floor with them and Gus was lying next to Gertie and stimulating her. He was a nurse if ever I saw one. The following day I noticed that Gertie appeared to be blind as she was walking into walls and walking thru her water and food dish. THE END OF THE STORY IS THAT - Gertie's vision came back and she is back to 100% in every way. Gus has more "brownie points" for all his caring than he will need for the rest of his life. We are very thankful puppy parents. 2. Our property does not have a proper yard for walking them. So we are planning to build a run next to our house. It will be about 5 ft wide by 28 ft long. We are trying to decide what surface to put on the run. We have ruled out pouring a concrete surface but are not opposed to concrete pads with gravel around it. We have ruled out crushed gravel as Gus got bloody paws when we walked them on an area that had crushed gravel. Has anyone had any experience with the kind of rubber mulch that is used on children's playgrounds? Any suggestions will be very appreciated. We want to get this done as soon as we are done with the snow this winter (we live in Pittsburgh, PA). 3. For now we are using washable potty pads that we purchased thru EZWhelp.com They are wonderful, but I do look forward to teaching them to go outside. 4. We have our first of 6 obedience classes next week. I hope that my husband and I learn how to take them for a polite walk among other skills. That's it for now. I hope that some of you will have some suggestions for the run that we will be building soon. Thanks, Carol |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi Carol - welcome back after a break ! First, I have to say thank GOD that your little precious Gertie is okay! My gosh, that must've been just terrifying to think about her going into cardiac arrest. Did the vet say why it happened? And what would happen if you had to put her under again, like for a dental? So sweet that Gus nursed her through . I don't have any suggestions on the run as far as mulch. But, I can tell you that for our little grass patch outside, we used fake grass - which lasts a LONG time, looks real, drains to the ground, and is reasonable. Maybe that's an option for you? It looks really nice/clean/fresh. Edited to add: This is the grass we bought from Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/2020252...13&R=202025213

| Oh, gosh! I'm so glad your little girl pulled through! It is not unusual for them to temporarily lose their vision after an incident like that. Thank God she is OK. Sounds like her best friend is quite a little guy. It's nice you are able to make a little run for them to go out in. I agree that crushed gravel is not a good idea for their little paws. Some places do make rounded stone in various sizes. You might consider the really small rounded gravel. The rain washes through that and if you have some good earth under it the gravel will stay pretty clean if it is washed. Other than that the only thing I can think of is some good play grass. They have some rugged grasses you can plant but I guess it would be hard to give it a good start growing if they were using it. Are you going to put a top on the enclosure in order to protect them from theft or escape? |

| My older pup prefers cement. I have a nice grass yard for him to pee and poo in and he chooses to do his business on the sidewalk. I know he has allergies...I am not sure if the grass irritates his belly since he's fairly low to the ground or it's just itchy or what...but he hates walking in grass. His former owners used pea stones in a designated potty area. |

| I live in Pittsburgh too Hi Carol, I'm so glad your Gertie is OK. How scary for you. My little Pippin goes in to be spayed on Friday. We are boarding her at the vet while we go on a short vacation to FL for a couple of days. Originally we were just going to board her at her vet, but they suggested to spay her while she was there since we were planning to do it in March. I hate being down away while she is having it done, but they said she would be fine and they would look after her. She will be groggy and need to be quiet any way. What part of Pittsburgh do you live in. I'm in Aspinwall and Pippin is 6 mos and about 5.5 lbs. I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions for your run. But glad your babies are doing well. SueinPgh |

We live in Mt Lebanon. I hope that your vacation was enjoyable and your puppy's surgery went well. We are still in the process of deciding about our puppy run. I'm leaning toward concrete squares with round gravel in the spaces between. That will give us good drainage and the concrete will help keep their nails short. Someone will be coming to give us ideas on the fencing and gates later this week. Carol | |
