Default yorkie rescue.... 1st time posting..warning long post

So working in a residential area , doing some door knocking (I'm a Real estate agent), a dog followed me back to my car, he was mangled and dirty. Knowing my wife does not want a dog, I ignored it. But the little guy kept following me. It followed me for a hour. I felt bad and gave it some water... As well as ask the people in the neighborhood if they know whom this dog belonged to... No signs anywhere. We'll it was getting late.. I decided to take the dog home.

I called a friend whom have a few strays on advise of what to do. He said to bring the dog over and he can at least give me some supplies for a day or two.. We washed the dog and looking at the soapy water, it had flea droppings. Gave the dog some puppy food and it ate as if it was it's last day (poor guy). I borrowed a crate, leash and off to home I went.

When I got home, my wife said "no" on keeping the dog, I said give it the weekend, so the kids can play with it for at least the weekend, then I'll look for a new home for it.

Worried about it's condition, I took it to the vet, the vet said it's still a puppy.. About 8 months.. It weighs 7.4lbs and is in excellent health, based on the puppy's condition, someone in the neighborhood was feeding it regularly but not take ownership, based on the condition of the mangled coat, the puppy have been roaming or living outside for a couple of weeks. It also did not have a ID chip.

When I introduce the puppy to my kids, I was worried if it would bite, as it tried to bite the vet during the mouth inspection. happily my kids (8 & 10 yr olds) were not bitten, and they were rough with the puppy.. I have to admit I've bonded with it as we'll. the puppy is not potty trained, so I'm working on that.

When I told my kids, they only have the weekend to play with the dog before I look for a home for it. They begged my wife.. She said, how can we take care of a dog when we can barely take care of ourselves. So yesterday, my wife went to a business dinner, I was working downstairs, I hear footsteps above me of a while. When I went up to check on the kids, it turns out, they not only put all of the toys away but proceeded to clean the whole living and dining room.

When my wife came home she was very surprised as was I. The next day, she said if, the house stays clean then we can keep the dog...

Happily to say, we have a new family member... Oscar!

I hope all works out for your and the little guy. You need to look into housebreaking him. You just can't let an untrained dog have free run of your home and someone has to take responsibility for taking him out.....frequently. Maybe give him an enclosure he can stay in like a puppy play pen or some other area to stay in when no one is there to watch him.

There is still the possibility that he may have actually belonged to someone and just got out and got lost. If he is a Yorkie then it is very possible that he made a break for it. They love to run and don't realize the dangers of getting too far from home. Maybe consider putting an ad in the paper but be careful not to identify what he looks like or what kind of dog he is. Make any responder give you identification of the dog they lost.

A long haired dog can get really messy looking really fast when out on it's own. If no one is missing a little darling like him then you are very blessed to have him and he is privileged to find a new home and family that loves him. If there is any chance you wife will change her mind it would be best to find him a new home now. It is very difficult on these dogs to have to be re-homed over and over but hopefully you now have a new much loved furry family member.

Did the vet give you any flea treatment for your pup??

If he didn't, you may want to buy something like Frontline to put on your your pup along with his bath or they may come back. I am sure your wife won't be happy if she has to treat the whole house for it.

Congrats on your new pup!!!What a great story!!

I've been searching Craigslist and posted some signs in the neighborhood, no responses yet, I was careful not to post pictures, just the breed. I'm crate training him now, I got the peeing schedule down (about 2-3 hours) it's the pooping, I'm trying to figure out.

He scratches a lot, so got to get medicated shampoo today, researching flea and tick medication, lucky this one is a shorthair yorkie so he is manageable.

Once I have the official thumbs up from my wife, I'm going to get him vaccinated and ID chipped.

Has anybody discussed with you the grooming costs? Even if you don't get haircuts often you still need to have his nails clipped and his "sanitary" areas kept clean. Grooming costs me $44 plus tip (less any coupon I might be lucky to have). Since we keep her short she goes every 7 weeks and thats stretching it. It you don't keep it short then you HAVE to brush often. If you aren't committed then work really hard to find it's owner.

Vet costs are additional and you should find out what they will run you.

I only mention this because your wife seems afraid of the cost. You also need to have him NEUTERED. Our animal shelter does it much cheaper than a private vet. You can use them for shots as well once he's had a good check up.

I've been research, we figured keeping this dog is like having another kid. Grooming fees around here is $50 on average. as far as my wife and cost, what I meant is keeping the house nice and neat, my kids tends to leave their toys out.. the house is a mess.. I think it will work out.

I was able to locate a lost yorkie poster locally, but it turns out to be a much smaller dog (5lbs) and older (14 yrs)..

I'm so glad you didn't ignore the little guy :-) there's nothing better than kids learning to be responsible and dogs know how to train them lol. One thing that could be causing his itching as well is an allergy o fleas. Yorkies are prone to flea allergies. Welcome to YT and I wish ou and Oscar the best, whether you find his owner, or you keep him, I think it will end up a win win situation or Oscar :-)

I am so glad you took him off the streets. I hope it works out and you can keep him. You won't regret it. I have 3 in long coat and learned to groom them myself. Also, if you can manage 20-30 dollars a month for pet insurance that helps with any unexpected vet costs. You are an angel.

Thank you for saving this little guy. We have 2 and have always done my own grooming. One is in long coat the other is growing out from a puppy cut (which I gave him myself). Yes you will have vet expenses but like was mentioned insurance helps a lot. Welcome to YT and the wonderful world of yorkies.

lol, big mistake, their eyes, you CANNOT LOOK AT THEIR EYES, that's what touches your heart lol, those adorable eyes, and they know how to play ppl with those eyes to what they want, lol. BEWARE OF THE EYES. You are such a good Dad, you're gonna spoil that lil boy, but then again, that's what yorkies are for, to love and spoil
