| OMG! My poor hound! I took Kuzco to the groomer for a bath and comb out today. He had tangles so i asked the groomer to untangle him so i could start over keeping his fur brushed. They took the phrase 'start over' and thought I meant SHAVE IT ALL OFF SO WE CAN START OVER!!!!! I am now afraid to go get him and see what they have done!!! YIKES! I better buy some doggy sweaters fast! My Poor baby!!!! |

| If the words "please shave my dog down" didn't come out of my mouth, they better not shave my dog!! I'd be talking to the manager and I surely woudn't be paying them a dime. I probably wouldn't be returning either. IDK about you...but I've been trying to grow my Ricky's hair out for a long time. I'd be sooo ticked if I took him in and the groomer shaved him when I didn't ask for it. IMO, that's as bad as if I went into my hair dresser with long hair and I ask for a trim and they gave me a short bob. |

| Well... the good news is that the hair will grow back. Some grows them out faster than others. As bad as that experience is for you and Kuzco, at least he wasn't physically harmed. That would be a whole new can of worms... |

| And actually, if he was REALLY tangled and matted, shaving him down would be the best thing for him.....it didnt pull and pinch and hurt as they worked and worked to get the tangles out....if it was just tats and tangles occasionally, then professional groomers can work those out without hurting the dog. |

| One thing to always remember is it is hair it will grow back. Callie has had some terrible hair cuts before but I try to just tell myself it will grow back. I remember something I read one time that you should not act upset when you pick them up from the groomer even if they look terrible because it can make them feel like they (the dog) did something wrong so I just take Callie and make over how happy I am to see her even if the hair looks bad. It does take awhile to get used to though I remember her first hair cut she went from all this fluffy puppy hair to none they had to shave her because I did not do the best job with her puppy hair I didn't realize how bad it can mat and that you need to make sure your brushing/combing all the way to the skin. After it started growing back in though it was so much silkier and didn't tangle at all.

| Poor puppy, especially given the cold weather. He defiantly needs some cute outfits. It seems like most groomers are only capable of shaving dogs down |

| When we first got Amy we couldn't have her groomed until she had all her shots. She only got one shot at a time and took I think 4 weeks to get all of them. She was a tangled mess and when we did get her groomed she had maybe an inch of fur left. Her hair does grown fast so it came back and I learned to brush her myself between grooming. She isn't happy with me but I get it done and she won't have tangles again. |

| Honestly its the best thing if the dog was extremely matted that they shaved him down. untangling those mats is painful and most groomers wont dso it and i dont blame them

| I too would probably shave a dog over going through painful tangle after tangle as it can really stress an anxious or fearful dog to have a groomer in a salon setting with other dogs and strange people and scents around and excitement amped up undergoing a usually painful de-tangling session. Sounds as if the the groomer did the kindest thing for the dog's well being and worried less about appearance.

| i will repeat-the boy was NOT matted and had only a tangle or two. I definitely agree that if it was bad he would be better off to be shaved. Its Ok tho. I'm getting used to it and he seems not to have noticed. Except he is shivering. Definitely time for adding to his wardrobe. I now have a Chinese Crested Yorkie!! |

YT 1000 Club Member | When I first started with Yorkies, I tried to let their coats grow out. But, given that I take them Hunting along a Bayou, which they jump into to catch Frogs or Snakes, made long coats a hazard more than a comfort. In route, they are very prone to flop down in a puddle of water to cool off as well. It's quite hot in this area and our winters are very short and usually mild. I take my guys to the Groomer three times a year, getting her to clip them at a #7 (3/8ths inch) where they can dry out quickly. Last clip is in August, allowing their coats grow out some for Winter.

| I was addressing your OP which said there were tangles and assumed it would be well more than one or two. And if you don't mind a gap or two, tangles can be cut out and grow back over trying to get them out the hard way over shaving. But if there were many, say five or six, I'd still go for shaving back and starting afresh. If the groomer shaved your dog over two tangles that could have been cut and teased out gently without hurting the dog, then you should complain and never return to that groomer.
