| Hello!!! Hello everyone, I signed up a few minutes ago. My name is Britt, I'm 24 and I have 2 yorkies named Max & Lily that are my fur children. I joined to hopefully get opinions about care and particularly home cooked meals, as I am trying to keep my pups around as long as possible. If anyone knows any great ideas that would be greatly appreciated! I'd like advice from actual yorkie owners, I don't trust what I read on the net about dog care. I hope to hear from you! And it's nice to meet everyone!! Thanks so much!! -Britt, Max&Lily |

| Hi Brit.....I have a 10 mth yorkie boy and a 2 yr old dachshund that I have fed a raw meat with pureed veggies since they were tiny pups. I transitioned them from kibble with home cooked for a month. They love anything I give them and are not the least bit finicky. For treats I give them little pieces of fruit, they love bananas, apples, pears, melons. I also give them vitamin and mineral supplements and fish oil from this holistic vet Dr. Peter Dobias - holistic veterinarian. Feeding your babies *real food* is the best thing you can do for them! |

Great food, I have been doing a lot of research on home made foods due to, I adopted a 2y/o male yorkie 3 mos.ago that was a surrender, (my vet works with a rescue team I just learned lol) any rescue goes first to the vet for check up then rehoming begins. I had just put down my beautiful lil girl at the age of 16 y/o, to long of a story to go into. I know she was 16 y/o but she was healthy, somewhat blind and hearing was going, but healthy, then diarrhea set in and off to the vet she went, she was in vet hospital for 7 days, for 6 days I visited her every day, for 6 days I got positive reports, like she would be coming home soon, day 7 before I went to visit her I received a call from my vet, she tells me "come in to say your good byes, you need to put her down" I near collapsed, was hysterical on the phone, 6 days of promising reports, day 7 I have to put her down, I was so over whelmed with what I was hearing. I went to vet, took my lil girl to my car to say my good byes in pvt. I loved her up, told her I loved her, kissing, her crying all the time, had her little head wet from my tears, forced my self to get back into control, dogs sense when we are upset, I didn't want to cause her more stress, she was whimpering in a way that she never did before, I knew she was in pain, she ended up with pancreatitis, vet said her organs were shutting down, I took her back into the office, saw the vet, begged her to save my girl, vet said they did all they could do, it was time for me to let her go. My baby trusted me to protect her, yet I held her in my arms whispering in her ear you are a good girl while a tech injected her and ended her life. I was devastated, I had to have a friend drive me to the vet to do this, I could not focus on anything but that phone call to say goodbye. For 6 weeks all I did was cry, the house felt so empty, I had never been 100% alone, I had a brood of 4 babies, when one went to rainbow bridge although I was sick with grief, I had other babies that needed me, they were mourning over the loss of a sister, I had to be strong for them, help them get out of their mourning mode. all my babies were 3 to 6 years apart, over the years I lost them one by one, until I had only one left, ppl would ask if I live by myself or did I live alone, I would say "no I live with my dog" she was the last of my brood. So now I was 1000% alone. I swore no more dogs for me, loosing them was to over whelming, The pain in my heart was to great, for 6 weeks I fought with myself to get or not to get another baby, it would have to be a rescue. I battled all day, every day for 6 weeks, do I want the pain of loosing another dog, the devil sitting on my left shoulder would tell me "remember the pain you have gone through, the angel sitting on my right shoulder would say, remember all the love they gave you, years and years of love, laughter, companionship, 6 weeks after putting her down my vet calls, they rescued this 2 y/o yorkie the night before, she said something about this dog reminds me of your little girl. I told my vet no more dogs, I can't take the pain, told her I did not want a male because they mark everything, she said the dog is neutered, some will mark, some will not mark, then I asked what it was that this dog has that reminded her of my girl, she said the ears, my baby girl had BIG stand up ears, my vet begged me to JUST come to see him, out of respect for my vet for her thinking of me, and knowing I would NEVER get a male dog, I knew it was safe for me to please the vet and just go see this dog. Well he came home with me (and I adore him). going to send this off before I loose it lol

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | HI and WELCOME to YT !!! We have a lot of homecookers here and they really love it. Just make sure you're truly feeding a balanced diet for your kiddos, as dogs do have RDAs (recommended daily allowances) just like we do. One place you can get a custom recipe that's very affordable is at BalanceIt.com.

Feeding your babies *real food* is the best thing you can do for them! __________________________________________________ ________ when I got home I took the dog out of the car to walk him, he pooped, it was watery, had mucus and blood in it, colitis, the next day I called the vet told her, took him in to vet, vet gave meds.... when I adopted this dog the prev. owner had a shopping bag with all his belongings and a folder with his medical history. He is also micro chipped and had name, address & phone # of prev. owner, The vet told me the prev. owner would like to have updates and pics of the dog, she asked would I do that, I said of course. so they dog was given meds for colitis, I have had dogs with colitis, it clears up within 2 weeks on meds, 3 weeks later there was no improvement, so back to the vet, diff, meds were given, I knew this dog had to have this colitis for a while, so I called the prev. owner, told her when she surrendered this dog it had colitis, she told me they got hit with hurricane Sandy, house got flooded had to evacuate, had to put dog in a shelter for 16 days, when they got they dog out he had this diarrhea. They took the dog to vet, was given meds, but dog still had diarrhea, she said the vet told her to NOT WORRY ABOUT THE DIARRHEA!!!!!!!! Hurricane Sandy was Oct.2012 I adopted him Nov. 2013...13 months this dog has colitis. I have the BEST vet in my area, I have been with her since 1984, she kept my last dog alive for years when she came down with cushings disease, I trust her 1000%, I knew the food I was feed this dog was not working with my vets meds, so I went on line to see what he should be eating (I was feeding him rice with low fat boiled chop meat and a side dish of vet canned dog food, vet approved of this) I cannot loose this dog, it will kill me if I do, I will do what ever I have to do to cure him, I found a website that talked about raw meat and pureed veggies, with sublaments. And it made sense what I read, So I started to add carrots, celery. both raw and a cooked potato, all pureed and mixed 2 tbsp. in with the rice & chop meat. 2 weeks ago I told this to the vet, still no improvement, his poop has not been watery, this has changed into soft like pudding no mucus, but always bllod in the poop. BUT, I will not stop my vets meds, and put him on the raw meat with veggies and sublaments, . I took him to vet last this week, she put him on a stick diet of just Hills prescription diet Z/D dry dog food, meds that are in capsule form to be given with same as above but canned dog food, I wrap the pills in the canned dog food and feed that way. He goes back in 2 weeks for his follow up. If I can get him cured, I want to put him on raw meat with veggies and sublaments, but I will get my vets approval before doing this. I am sorry for this NOVAL lol, some times a person has to start at A to get to Z. I told you all this because I agree with the raw meat & veggies, and hope one day I can feed this to my new lil boy. God bless you if you read this novel lol.

| Matese~I'm sorry your baby is sick. I know it is very stressful. I have lost a few of my furkids over the years too, some much too young. That is what prompted me to learn how to use more natural ways to feed and heal them. Vets, just like human Drs have almost NO training in nutrition. They only treat the symptoms of diseases and don't even believe that diseases can be cured with proper nutrition. I have learned otherwise over the last few years, much to the benefit of my babies and my pocketbook! I'd rather spend money on keeping them healthy than on vet bills and medications which are all toxic to them. Are you giving your little furby a probiotic because some meds cause diarrhea too. Whenever my dogs have diarrhea I give them cooked pumpkin or sweet potato/yam. lt stops it fast. White potatoes and carrots aren't really good for most dogs. Something else you could try is making a infusion with dried marshmallow root as it is mucilaginous and very soothing to the gut lining. You should be able to find it at a health/natural food store. Put 1 Tbsp dried root to a cup of room temp water in a glass jar and let it sit on the counter for at least 4 hrs. Then offer it to your dog or mix with a bit of broth for flavor. Peppermint, ginger and tumeric are also anti-inflamatory and can be mixed into the food. |
