| Please I need help with rescued yorkie I rescued a 3 yr old yorkie from the pound. Never had a yorkie before so wasn't sure Of behavior. She will not I repeat will not relieve herself outside other than pee. I have had her a week and take her out twice an hour but she will come right in and poop. I am at my wits end and do not want to give her away but I don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

| welcome to yt and thank you for saving a yorkie. a week is hardly enough time for a baby to adjust to your new home and feel safe and confident. do you have potty pads for her to try going poo on those instead of having an accident in the house? are you going out with her when she does her business or is she outside alone during that time?

| This baby is a rescued baby.....you have no assurance of what her previous life was like. On a good day, you would need to expect any dog to take several months to become familiar and settled into their new environment. Yorkies are very sensitive and intuitive and it may take your Yorkie a little longer to get accustomed to your home....this is going to require much patience and understanding on your part. I suggest two books to all my new puppy owners....everyone should read these books BEFORE getting a Yorkie, so you will know what you are getting into. "Yorkies for Dummies" is the first book...."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second book....These two books will cover 98% of the issues you are going to be addressing with your new baby....they should be in everyones library for immediate reference. Please do not send your pup away....yet one more traumatic issue for her to overcome. You need to learn how to properly housebreak your Yorkie....they are stubborn, but when they finally LET you win this potty training thing, you will have a wonderful, devoted pup. As was suggested, you need to invest in ee pads for the house, until you can get her accustomed to pooing outside! You can get her used to using the pee pads inside, then put the pad she pooed on, outside and she will be drawn to it....Give this little soul a fighting chance to be a good girl and to try to win a place in your heart.....she is trying....she is just confused and insecure and trying to make someone happy.....you need to pull out all the stops, get some patience, and allow this little soul win you over......she is trying.....you need to give her a lot longer than a week to "get over her past history and start following rules around your place or you are outta here!" |

Aside from this poster, like they said, you HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HER PAST HISTORY WAS, it takes time for a rescue to TRUST YOU, you CANNOT THINK ONE WEEK IS MORE THEN ENOUGH TIME FOR THIS RESCUE TO LEARN, get the books that was suggested, things don't happen in a day, time and patience, PATIENCE is a MUST. You have rescued a beautiful lil girl and this I THANK YOU FOR, PLEASE do not get frustrated and even THINK of bringing her back, rehoming several times will make this poor lil girl so un-trustful of ppl. The above poster has given excellent advise on the wee wee pads, if the cost of the pads are to expensive then news paper will do just as well (that's what was used before some genus invented plastic backed pads). PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not send her back, do not "kick her to the curb" give this lil girl a chance, yorkies, terriers in general (yorkie is a terrier breed) , are harder to train due to short concentration span, but are trainable, you just need to be PATIENT, what you will end up with is a beautiful lil frisky clown, one that you will adore. She is confused, she does not yet know you, remember, she came from ???? was subjected to ?????? was rehomed????? she needs time to gain trust in you, PLEASE, give her this time. Show her you love her, be firm but NOT HARSH with her. I am BEGGING you to be PATIENT, it WLL HAPPEN. Buy the books, and PLEASE keep us updated as to her progress, and please remember:::: where did she come from ???? was subjected to ?????? was rehomed????? give her that "FOREVER HOME" Give her time to know you, you are just another STRANGER to her, give her time to gain trust in you. PLEASE

| Just to add, I adopted a 2 y/o male 3 months ago, got him from my vet, he was a surrender, I have always had female yorkies, my last one, the last year before I had to put her down she peed all over the house, carpets in every room, although I cannot smell it (shampooed every time she peed, and after having to put her down had rug cleaning company shampoo all carpets) any dog coming into my house can and will pick up dog pee smell, for this reason, I was NOT going to get another dog, and having to put down 4 yorkies in my life time has become toooo over whelming for me, the pain in my heart is to great. I told my vet about my last dog peeing issue, she told me some dogs that smell dog pee will pee in house, some will not, based on that I went to see this dog that she was begging me to "just come see him, something about him reminds me of your little girl" I saw him and he came home with me. He has NEVER peed in the house, but had poop issues, EVERYYYYY morning I woke up to poop in one area, He would pee & poo every time I took him out. I would take him out just before I went to bed, he would do his business, yet poo in the middle of the night, and he knew he did wrong lol, his beautiful BIG stand up ears would be squashed against his head when I would get up in the morning, so I knew what he had done lol (poor lil baby) sooooo, I purchased wee wee pads and put one in the area where he was pooping in, so he picked a diff. spot, I put a wee wee pad in that area also, so he found another place, I put a wee wee pad there also, so now I have 3 wee wee pads in 3 diff. areas lol, well ya know what, it took 2 months for him to see I was going to win, not him, now he poops outside, no more pooping in the house. It takes time, even with his poop issue I NEVER thought of bringing him back to my vet, I ADORE this lil guy. YOU WILL WIN, trust me on this. I know who owned this dog, spoke to them, so that is a plus for me. I am trying to bring out, it will take time, if you LOVE the dog take the time, it will happen.

| first of all if you have gone to the trouble of rescuing her you must have wanted her, so why are you so short of patience so soon. Perhaps you have only had big dogs in the past or no dogs, but just so you know, probably at least half the yorkies out there are paper/pad trained to go to the bathroom indoors, so that could be the main reason she will not go outside. What you might try doing is pick up some of the poop and bring it outside, so she has some of her smells out there. You can also try putting a potty pad in front of the door you go out, it would be interesting to see what you are dealing with. While those books are good, if I am not mistaken they probably address dealing with a puppy, you do not have a puppy, you have a three year old where habits have been formed, it would be great if you knew what they were and retraining from that would be easier. For instance my last yorkie went in litter boxes with newspaper in the bottom of them. I decided that pee pads would be cleaner so I bought some of those, well he did not take to the change and started peeing and pooping just outside the litter box. So I put the newspapers back in and he started using it again, I tried the pee pad one more time and back he went to peeing outside the box. If someone had adopted him, they would have had a devil of a time figuring out why he would not pee on the pad since more yorkies use pads than newspapers. I had a friend that trained her dog to only go on cement. I tell you this so you realize that you don't know her past habits and can't assume what they were, so patience is a must. If it was me I would try putting a pad and perhaps some newspapers by the front door and see what happens, if the dog goes on them with little prodding then you will know you have a dog that was used to going inside, and then work on retraining from that by bringing the pad outside. When you let the dog out to go potty, is it done by leash or does she run loose? My sister's yorkie is used to having the run of the yard. Recently we were both at my parents house and could not shut their gate due to heavy snow. So we had to take the dogs out by their leashes, Lola is leash trained to potty so it was easy, however stubborn Lucy would not go while on the leash, she would stand there hunched over almost afraid to move, even though she goes for walks via the leash with no problem, but she refused to potty that way, she held herself for close to 24 hours before finally giving in and peeing while I held the leash. I also know someone that keeps artificial turf mats on their balcony and the dog goes potty on that. So while I did not exactly answer your question, I hope that you understand that unlike humans who are all use to sitting on a toilet to potty, small dogs have been given a wide variety of potty choices by their owners.

| oh by the way, welcome to YT and just so you know you will see that several of your posts don't show up right after you post them, LOL to me it is a form of newcomer abuse, but I know the administrators do it to cut down on various spam type of problems. But hang in there, we have all been through having our first few posts delayed

| Welcome to YT. We had a little rescue who did this but after a few weeks she learned to go outside. It takes lots of time and patience but you will be so rewarded with so much love when they finally get it. It is so worth all the time and effort you put in to watch them turn into the beautiful loving creatures they become.

| She acts like she doesn't want to be on the grass. I have read some say puppy pads are great and some say never use them. I guess I will try them. And yes I have had small dogs a dachshund who lived to be 14. I adopted her because they told me previous owner said she was house trained and I didn't want to start over with a puppy and I wanted to help a dog that was in the pound. She also goes completely nuts when put in kennel so at night I put her in bed with me. When I got up yesterday she had peed on the comforter at the end of the bed but has not do far peed or poo in her kennel. She stays in kennel all day while I'm at work then I take her out on leash and have also tried without leash. She will only pee no poo. |

| Well.. my two are "potty trained". BUT! They're not as good when they visit someones home. Especially Zoey who's only 5.5 lbs. Like earlier posters said, it's only been a week. She's also probably adjusting to the new environment so please have patience. |

| My two are housebroken and they know they can't pee or poop in their house. If we take them to someone else's house there is a problem, it's not their house. Have you tried taking the poop outside and saying to her potty outside?

| Yorkies can be stubborn but love and training will be enough. Don't let this poor girl go back to the shelter she just needs time. She might have been trained at one point but lost training at the shelter. Or she might have been a puppy mill dog you never know give her time and firm training. Petsmart has some puppy training classes they are great.

| its a wonderful thing you have done by rescuing this little baby... just give it some time with the potty training,,, it takes time... please don't bring her back..she would just be confused on what is going on... she is probably just frightened ..she is in a new home with new surroundings.. give her time to adjust.. how long is she left in her kennel all day... maybe that can be the problem..she is in there all day while your at work and as soon as you come she needs to release it... maybe you should try to confine her to one room for now or maybe get a play pen for her...she might like it better than the kennel all day..

YT Addict | It took me almost six months to house train my girl. She was ten months old when I got her, but with work and praise she is awesome. She will poop sometimes during the night, but I put down peep pee pads and she always uses them. In the morning I make a big deal of how good she was to use the pads, as I don't want her to start going any where else in the house. Welcome to YT, and your little girl will come around, just give her some time....

| Have you tried taking her poo from the house where she is going and putting it where you want her to go?
