| Dewclaws and carpet Right now at MILs house we have mostly tile and wood floors. Only carpet is rugs and in MILs room is very low pile carpet. In our soon to be moved in house we will have 80% carpet. Not super high pile but the regular pile carpet you see in homes. Toto has dew claws and a pinky claws that are set back up and high (deformity from birth). Just wondering if I need to worry about his dew claws getting stuck in carpet. Do I need to keep play nearby on top of a short pile rug?

| Most of my dogs have had dew claws and we've always had carpet. I know it wasn't an ongoing issue, it might have happened once though, and I think one of their tags got caught on the carpet once. The main thing their dew claws got caught on were blankets, especially knitted or crocheted. |

| We have always had carpets and dogs with dew claws and no problems but I would make sure to keep them cut short and not let them get to long.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It's really important to keep those dewclaw nails clipped. Many groomers often overlook the dewclaws when clipping nails and this can get caught in loose pile carpeting and throws.

| My entire house (except My entire house is carpeted med high, not low pile (except bathrooms & kitchen) none of my dogs ever got nails or the dew claw caught, as another poster wrote just caught on crochet or knitted throw blankets. Sometimes if the groomer didn't file nails after clipping them, their nails would snag on the carpeting. Hope this helps you out.

| Thanks everyone. For some reason Toto doesn't mind getting his dew claw or pinky claw clipped, but hates when I try for the others. The middle ones get filed down by themselves when he walks so no biggie. I am going to try a nail file for fake nails. I just hate using the nail clippers. I practically have an anxiety attack while I do it. Once I nicked his quick and he screamed, wiggled our of my lap and landed on his head on the bathroom floor.

If you know someone that has a dremel, maybe you can try it out to see if it's worthwhile?

| I tried Pedipaws with Uni before and she hated it. But she hates anything on her nails. I wouldn't want my nails Dremmeled either, so I don't blame her.

| If the carpet is plushy, IDT you'll have a problem w/it. @ our old house, we had berber carpet & it's loopy, can get their nails caught on there. But they ran around like cwazzie & nothing happened. Momo did lose his dewclaw from playing w/his ball, he would roll it under the couch (which had a bed) & paw it around. Somehow it got caught & he ripped it out. Never found the nail, so have no idea if it got caught on the fabric of the couch or the berber carpet. Now we have only the leather couch & laminate wood flooring. How about wrapping Toto up in a towel when clipping his nails...that's what I have do to w/Momo & Princess. It keeps them from me hurting them.

My biggest issue was Magnus's dewclaw because it wasn't getting grind on the walks. Now I just get them grind down slightly every couple days just to get him more used to it.

| i'd be more concerned about her jumping on a fence and snagging it there. Carpet I can't imagine posing much of a threat. I wish my dog had his removed because his grow into a straight circle right into the pad. They are such a pain and he hates getting it cut, which has to be done often. |
