| What would it take to become a yorkie breeder? Just wondering. I have absolutely no plans in the near future of breeding Chloe. For one shes too small, two there are no other yorkies anywhere near where I'm from and three the nearest vet is two hours away. But just a question for those of you yorkie breeders or who know something about it. What is the process you have to go through to be a good expirienced yorkie breeder? I know alot of you have plenty of expirience with breeding now, I've seen many pics of those cute little babies, but how did you know you were ready to breed your pups the first time? And how did you prepare to become a breeder? TIA

| breeder I am not a breeder YET. I plan to be and am in the process of buying my female to complete my pair to start with. I already have two mentors lined up and while i am waiting for the time to come, probably a couple of years down the road, I am reading and learning everything I can about the breed and about what it takes to be a breeder. That is a good place to start. Research and study. I will be a small breeder but want to be a quality one that people know that when they purchase my pups, they are getting a quality dog. |

I'm in the EXACT same boat. I have been researching it for some time and am waiting for my female to come home. I have 2 mentors that have been so helpful. I am doing all the research I can now - as I know I have about 2 years before the real fun starts. I think the key is research, research, research!

| It starts with the desire, then you become "a yorkie FANATIC" and find yourself only interested in literature about the breed. You'll move on to literature about reproduction, talk to anyone you can about it, then you start your "search". From then on, your most likely hooked for life if it's really in your blood. Having a good breeder to talk to along the way is also one of the BEST things a person can do in the beginning. (Heck I still need to talk to my breeder friends about things and seek advice to this day) You will never learn it all and your knowledge will grow as you begin to have experience. I was a yorkie owner before I ever bred them. I think most people who breed had one just as their pet prior to becoming interested in raising them. If someone just suddenly wanted to "aquire their first yorkie and immediately start producing pups" I'd have to say that is bad and probably not a person with the breeds best interest in mind. |
