| Problems I am having with my new yorkie I am having some issues with my new Yorkie Sophie. She is having bad diarrhea and I took her to the vet on Saturday and he gave me meds to give her but it does not seem to help. Can anyone give me any ideas on what to try? Can someone tell me how much I should be feeding her each day. I am feeding her Fromm Healthy Puppy Gold. The bag says 5/8 of a cup she weights about 2.8lbs. Does that seems like a little to much? How many times a day does she need to be feed? Is it normally for her to behave very well in the morning and in the afternoon its like she took speed.... She will not listen and is constantly doing things she should not do. I have not even had her for 2 weeks so I am not sure if this is normal. Please someone give me some help! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Try giving her some canned plain pumpkin...not the kind with pie spices in. This can often correct bowel problems. Assuming she is very young, it's not likely she will over eat, & should have food available all the time while she's growing. She will continue to do things she shouldn't until you teach her otherwise. I found squeaky toys very useful in distracting Roxy's attention away from things I didn't want her to do. Give it a squeak & toss at her for her to play with. Keep plenty of toys & things for her to do around to fill the need to chew & be destructive. It takes a lot of supervision on your part. Teach her some commands with little treat rewards. Make it a game. They have the attention span of a gnat when young, so be prepared for quick changes. The first few months can be a bit labor intensive, but can end up with her having very good manners if you put the time in with her. When you say she acts like she is on speed, she is running around like a Nascar driver on drugs... that is likely what we call the Zoomies. Yes, this is very normal! Don't be concerned or worry about it. She's burning unused energy. Just let her run herself down. She's fine. I always enjoy the moment. Hope this helps & welcome to YT!

| Lola is three and still does zoomies, especially after baths and sometimes at bed time, my husband and I love it because she is so funny. Our bed sits in the middle of the room and she will run around it like twenty times, we come down to her level on the floor and she runs up to us with a head butt then takes off again at rocket speed. Enjoy this time and get involved with the game. If she is an only puppy she will see you as her playmate and use dog like behavior to engage you into her game. Often it is hard on puppies after leaving a litter where they had playmates, she is probably very bored and lonely at times, so now she will look to you for fun play. I am assuming the vet ran some tests on her stool to see if she has parasites, this is very important I have seen many new puppies come home with this bug that causes bad diarrhea http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet...ia-in-dogs/766 Sometimes they will even give you antibiotics just to be sure, what did the vet give you? did you change food suddenly, if so that could cause it. When Lola was puppy she went through a good week of severe diarrhea to the point she was screaming when she would have to go, which was very often. I took her to the vet at least twice and he mostly gave her parasite meds even though none were detected. He finally helped me figure out the right dose of children's imodeam and that was the only thing that worked, within a day it was gone. But we ruled out everything else first. I think what caused it was I gave her a greenie (but not that brand) type of chew that looked like a toothbrush and was almost as big. It was hard and I thought this would be something she would chew on for hours, even days. However that was not the case she was in her cage and I was cleaning, in less than a half hour the whole chew was gone. I still regret giving her that to this day and will never giver her any type of edible chews like that especially greenies, they are to dangerous for dogs. I was lucky because this did not have lasting effects on her digestive system but something like this could throw a dog into having pancreatic issues for the rest of their lives, so be careful will all that type of stuff, many yorkies have sensitive stomachs so it is important especially when they are puppies not to be giving them lots of table scraps and things like jerky treats from the pet stores. Also read every label carefully and do not buy ANY treat that is not made in the USA, run from anything that is made in China. Best of luck with your puppy and welcome to Yorkie Talk.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I would mix the pumpkin in the dog food every time you feed her. I feed Galen twice a day.

| something else that helped me during Lola's diarrhea week from hell is a medication that can be applied to her butt to ease the pain. I am not sure about your pup but Lola's butt was so inflamed and raw that she was afraid to poop because it hurt so bad. she would back herself in the corner and sit down with the most scared look on her face, it was pitiful to watch. I happened to tell a friend who had just had anal surgery, she had a crème that was a combination of antespic and numbing that she said would take the pain away. it worked immediately. As a precaution I did have to put a cone on her head, because unlike humans dogs tend to lick an area that hurts and we did not want her licking the crème. I am not a proponent of using human medicines on dogs but in this instance it was a life saver. I think Lola still remembers the pain because every once in a while she will have a bad poop that sticks to her and she acts like no other dog I have seen, she gets in a corner and has that same scared and concerned look on her face, in an instant my husband and I know what's wrong, we call it Lola's poopy butt face

| I did take Sophie to the vet and he run a stool sample and it showed no parasites. He gave me some liquid med to give her every 8 hours but it does not seems to help. I did try some new treat for when she went potty outside or on the puppy pad. The vet said not to give them to her any more. The dog food I am feeding her is the same thing the breeder has been feeding her so I don't think it is that. I am glad to know that she is going through something a lot of puppies go through as Sophie is so important to me even if I have had her less than 2 weeks. I had a peke about 15 years ago and I waited until I retired to get another pup so I can spend a lot of time with her. I feel for her so much and I hate that she is so miserable. |

Food should be down all the time. She could have a sensitivity to an ingredient in the food or just have an irritated bowel now. Often I will cook up some chicken breast drain and mince about a couple of tbsp and mix in some well cooked white rice. That is usually easier to digest and you can have her on that for a few days until the diarrhea settles down. How old is she? This sort of thing often happens with the stress of going to a new home. DO NOT allow any vaccinations right now while she is having diarrhea issues. Can the breeder offer any help? | |

| You can also try probiotics. There's a brand card Benebac that you can find at Petco in the small pets section, where you find hamsters. Those tubes are good for pets up to 10 lbs. since she's little, I wouldn't give her more than 1/2 a tube at a time. When mine is sick, I give him the benebac once in the morning and once before bed. We also do pumpkin if we don't have benebac or if it's really bad. I do 2 tablespoons for my 8+ lb Yorkie as a mid day snack when he's feeling lousy.

| for stomach upset slippery elm bark works really well, a little probiotic sprinkled on her food may help. I use colloidal silver as a natural antibiotic and human grade diatomaceous earth as a natural dewormer and remover of parasites. |

| Thanks everyone for the great ideas. As I already had the pumpkin I started her on it right away. I will try that for a couple days and if it does not get any better I will try something else. |

Yorkie Yakker | Sounds like she's waking up! When she starts going wild, play with her a little before to drain energy. I'd change the food. As a warning -- my baby suffered from pancreatitis, where basically, digestive enzymes release early and digest the pancreas. I wanted to do bloodwork the first time, but I didn't, and so she suffered. Get bloodwork done just in case, especially if she starts throwing up. And some dogs just have super sensitive stomachs, so as a last resort, cook your own dog food; chicken breast with a bit of pumpkin. Hope Sophie feels better!

| I think bloodwork on a puppy is a good idea, gives you a base line for future reference and it's nice to know things like liver and kidney functions.

| Diarrhea can cause a young pup to dehydrate. If you have not seen any improvement then call the vet. Did they get a stool sample and look at it under the microscope? Sometimes if the stool is entirely runny it is difficult to get an accurate look at the sample to determine the cause. You may need to get another one to the vet to be checked. It is hard to treat something without a proper diagnosis. As far as her activity....she is a Yorkie! I have to tell you that I was unsure if I had a possessed puppy when Gracie was a young! I had never had a terrier before. I had trained plenty of other breeds of dogs but terriers are different. I would suggest you get a good Yorkie book and read up on the breed. These cute little angels were bred to kill rodents. They are feisty and full of energy. If you learn how to work with that temperament and not against it you will be less frustrated. My little girl's idea of a good time is to have a good fight with her toys or a game of chase with me. Lots of exercise, play, and training is about your only defense. A tired puppy is a well behaved puppy. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Sorry to laugh - but no puppy at her age 'listens' - Don't we all wish they do? You got advise on her food but I just popped in here to tell you to enjoy her and puppy proof your house....don't leave expensive chewable stuff around for her to get cause they WILL find it - my husband went through 2 pair of pricey eyeglasses due to my girls lol - I TOLD him to keep them where they can't get to them! |
