| Grooming Questions Hi again, I didn't know where I was supposed to start this thread so I figured under general discussion will do. I wanted to know how old your yorkie was when he went to the groomer. What did they do? Did you feel it was a good experience? Also how old was your yorkie when you gave him his first bath? When you comb and brush him, what do you do to get him to actually enjoy being combed and brushed as well get him to stop attacking the brush? |

| Hi from Texas too! I am no expert but I took my babies to Petsmart within a week after bringing them home. They had their first shots and I was concerned about them being around other dogs. Called the groomer and she suggested I bring them in at 5:45, just after most of the dogs were gone. Dogs went straight in and I picked them up soon afterwards..no waiting in a cage for "their turn". They cleaned ears and around the bottom area, trimmed nails, tidied up their feet. I still take them monthly to do the stuff I can't seem to master but do the rest of the grooming and bath things inbetween. I bathed my little Biewer the minute I got him home at 12 wks. old. He smelled like Jet fuel (he came from Germany). Just made sure he didn't get chilled and he did fine. Grooming, I like to do each morning before I get ready for work. I started it as soon as I got them home. At first they wouldn't stand still at all, but each week they stood longer until now I can ALMOST get through before they get tired of it and want down. I think the routine is what makes them relax and it gives me a chance to put up topknots so they can see (I am still learning how to do the topknot thing!). Its relaxing for us all.

| Hi. I just took Baxter to the groomers yesterday, for his first puppy visit. He is 12 weeks old. I did this with my cocker also to get them used to her. We just play it by ear and see how it goes. She will only work with him however long they will let her. He did amazing. He went at 12 noon, so it was time for a nap,. and he was great. Didn't get to excitied as he was a little sleepy. She got to bath him, trim ears feet and his little bottom. She laughed saying he was so exhausted that she couldn't keep him standing to finish him. I know with this approach he will not be scared and like the cocker will look forward to seeing her. As for the brush, he fights me also, I just try to work it in when he is tired and not so playful. Hope this helps and good luck. |

| Thank you both for the advice, the getting him tired seems like a very good idea. As far as self grooming do you do it everyday, once a week , etc? |

| I gave both my dogs their first bath at 8 weeks old. I got their 1st groom at 4 and 5 months and it was a good experience. I took them to a different place for their 2nd goom and it was a better experience.

| I try to groom Baxter every day by just brushing him. But like I said, he has to be a little tired or no go for that. Good Luck |

| My Matthias gets a bath every four or five days. He loves it. The first time I brushed him he tried attacking the brush but I gently and firmly held him tight and brushed him while giving him treats at the same time to reward him for sitting still. Now he adores being brushed. If he gets a little tangle, I use my daughters' hair detangler (the no-tear kind) and it works GREAT! (and he smells like apple when he's done too! hahahaha) He hasn't been to the groomer as of yet but it's a-coming. His nails are really growing quite long now and while I know how to do it from doing my Brittany's nails, he is so tiny that I would prefer a pro do it for a while. The only thing Matthias has a problem with is hair bows. He hates the rubber banded kind and I have yet to find a clip that will stay in his hair. His hair is silky-ish so if he scratches his ear the clip just falls right out. So I'm trying to find a better hair clip - one that is easy to put in (only takes one hand to do) and one that will stay in silky hair.

| I got my Yorkie when he was 8 weeks old. He gets a bath every weekend. He is 16 weeks old now and has never been to the groomer. I cut his hair myself. I am keeping it short for now. He's looking good! If and when I decide to let his hair grow out longer - we'll go to the groomer, and I'll work with her for a while. PS: My groomer did say she didn't even what to see him until he's had all his shots (which would be after this next Saturday). Good luck! Carol Jean |

| Giovanni is 9 weeks old and is going to the groomer for the first time this weekend, it staterd off as just getting his nails clipped, but for only a few bucks more the groomer will wash and trim as well, so I figured why not. Also by going to the groomer I figured I can get tips on how to bathe and clip his nails in the future. |
