| Cold weather+ yorkie puppy Hi,All I just recently joined a while back and I have a yorkie pup named Minnie. The breeder pee pee pad trained them and that's what she suggested. I've never messed with pads, always crate trained+ schedule but the weather is unfortunately cold on most days. We have a crate set up like one of those potty training apartment crates(basically a crate with a divider insert with a cutout for a dog to pass thru) with one side a potty pad and the other is a sleeping area. She does GREAT with that set up but once she's out(we have other pads in the other areas of our house, half the time she won't mess on them. So I'm thinking we just confused the puppy and should we ditch pads(everyone says it just teaches them its okay to pee in the house) but its cold out....and I want her fully vaccinated before taking her outside. So any suggestions? And sorry for the long post. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome and congratulations. I have 2 that are pad trained and one that will only go outside. In my experience, they never learn to hold it as they have access to the pads 24/7. Also, mine will use the pads 90% of the time but they still will have accidents. The pads are convenient but I think in the future I will only train to go outside. Maybe you could set up a small area outside and train Minnie to go there. Then she wouldn't be outside for long.

| If you can't fully watch her I would keep her in a play pen with the pad and a bit of room to play in.
