| How long does anesthesia take to wear off completely ? Gizmo got fixed yesterday and the poor baby was sitting up almost all night, with a glazed look in his eyes. They did say they gave him pain medication before I picked him up yesterday at 5pm. He's finally laid down as of about 4 or 5 this morning but still periodically sits up looking dazed. I made a bed on the floor last night down next to his expen, so I could keep an eye on him, but he's still acting totally out of it :-( I have a onsie on him and have removed the back part several times to see if he needs to go potty, but e doesn't want to. I gave him some watered down raw food about midnight last night, and am giving him water through a syringe, because he doesn't want to drink from his bowl :-( he got fixed, had 5 teeth pulled and got a microchip yesterday. Just wondering how long it should take till he starts acting more alert. Not sure how to explain it because he des wake up, he just seems stoned ? His gums are pink, he's eaten food ad drank water, just not acting like himself I guess. How long did it take your fur baby boy to go potty? Thanks in advance for any advice :-) I might call his vet later if he still seems out of it. Is it normal to take ths long acting this way? He got fixed later in the day yesterday. |

| Jackson took a good 24hrs after his last dental. I picked him up around 1pm and he wasn't really with it again until the next morning.

| Allie had a csection and spay late Thursday/early Friday and it was almost 36 hours before she started acting "normal". Definitely give the antibiotics. It's for infection prevention.

| Usually I find the meds wear off within 24 hours. It may just be the combination of the anesthesia and pain meds. Nevertheless, I would probably have bile acid testing done on him at some point. My Teddy Bear had bladder stones in Feb and they found out he had a liver shunt...in seven years with me he had never really shown any symptoms and/or alterations in blood work. There was only one symptom that I thought of after the fact: When he came to me he was a foster pup and he had surgery....he had a very difficult time with the anesthesia and pain meds and was kept at the hospital for an extra day. That was probably the only clue that was missed over 7 years. He had anesthesia after that when he had dentals, but I never noticed anything unusual.

| Well I gave him some more food, last time was about 2am, so I figured he might be hungry. I mixed the raw diet with water to make a kind of gruel, and he inhaled it. I have taken off the onsie as he peed in it :-( and now have the inflatable collar on him. He seems to be more comfortable in it, but is not getting up walking right now, so I'm keeping him safe in his xen. After I gave him the gruel I made up, which he ate it all off a spoon due to not being able to get his head in the shallow bowl with the inflatable collar on, I then gave him his antibiotic, and some water after that with a syringe. My husband was holding him, and I had to force his mouth open to give him the antibiotic. He did not growl or nip at me like he was doing last night, but as soon as I walked away he nipped my husband in the nose lol, thankfully not hard but apparently hubby is still the bad guy for taking him to the vet, and I'm the good mama for picking him up aka rescuing him from the mean people :-) He's still just laying down and does not want to walk just yet, although he will sit or stand up, then not move and just stare off into space, so I keep having to go get him in his pen and lay him back down. I just looked over and he's finally napping again :-) he stayed awake just sitting the majority of the night, so I'm glad he's getting some rest. He is not a happy camper right now, and every time he sees my husband he gives hubby the look of shame my hubby should feel for taking him there. What was funny is he let me take off his onsie, feed him, give him medicine by forcing his mouth open, never growling or nipping, then once I did all that to him, he waited for me to walk away and bit my husband so I'm pretty sure he's holding a grudge with hubby. He's staying awake most of the time just looking sad, but now is making eye contact with me, and doesn't want me out of his sight or he gets agitated. I'm hoping when he has to potty again when he wakes up, that he will be able to get to his pad in his pen. One good sign is e did give me a couple of his tiny sweet yorkie kisses :-) on te other hand if I were my hubby, I probably wouldn't put my face near Gizmo, as Gizmo seems to be holding a grudge with him lol. I think he's making progress since I got kisses, plus he ate and drank, he's just not wanting to move around just yet. Last edited by Sunnydayz; 12-31-2013 at 01:52 PM. |

| So apparently part of Gizmos depressed acting, is due to having anything on his body, he doesn't like it :-) so I guess he hates onsies and he also hates inflatable collars, as well as soft fabric ones. We took off the inflatable collar for a minute and he went trotting around the living room, then went into the kitchen and ate a bunch of his kibble, drank some water, all with a little perkiness in his step. Unfortunately he then decided to sit down and start licking his incision, soooooo back on with the inflatable collar and back to the I can't move mood :-) |

| What anesthesia and pain meds were used? If more than Iso and Propofol were used it could have thrown him for a loop. Buprinorphrine does this to my girl. She is liver compromised but it isn't that abnormal.

| Cookie threw up her food until about 18 hours after. It seemed like about 3 hours or so before she'd really lay down and relax. For what seemed like the longest time she'd stand up with her head down. Definitely do not like seeing my pup get anesthesia.

| Yep he too was standing or sitting most of the night. He's much better today :-) he got super excited when he saw our housekeeper later in the day, which tells me he's very upset with us lol. He just peed and filled almost half a pad, so that was good to see. He's now sleeping normal, well as normal as he can with an inflatable collar on :-) he's definitely much more alert now :-) |
