| My 6 yr old yorkie has taken control 4 What are the basic commands every yorkie should follow? And how do I teach these to my stubborn Charlie. He knows "sit" and "down," but they are just tricks to him; I never taught him that they were commands. That sounds crazy, but it is true. |

| It's good to keep practicing tricks every day. You might be surprised when he will follow them as "commands." Max got out into the yard and was sprinting toward the open gate. I screamed "down" and he obeyed! I almost fell on top of him doing a dive to catch him. Same with Teddy. He obeyed "come" and "down" in two scary situations. In addition to practicing these "tricks", I have taught my boys words while walking and daily routines. They know "wait" which means stop walking and sit. They know "okay" and "quick quick" for crossing streets. You can use any words you want to "mark" a behavior. In terms of general obedience, having a daily routine of activities is very helpful. Doing them around the same time each day and talking to Charlie will help. When your dog knows what to expect, it has a calming effect. There is more info in the training forum. YouTube has great videos too.

| Sit, Stay, Down, Leave it (or drop it). My two know few others but I think these are 4 of the most basic commands every dogs should learn. These started out as "tricks" for treats but eventually, it transitioned to "commands" so I say it's all in how consistent YOU are with the training. I find it amusing that they seem to follow my commands more when I say it in Korean than in English. LOL |
