| What to feed ? 5-6 week olds I have been hand feeding these babies since they were 3 days old (5 of them) due to mom having hypocalcemia. Mom is doing fine since the nursing has stopped They are now 5 weeks old, just starting to get teeth and I am still bottle feeding formula and puppy gruel. When should I stop the bottles, because although I have introduced a bowl of formula to them, they are not interested and I wonder if because of the sucking they have missed with their mother. They are doing wonderful and healthy babies and I love them all, but not sure on the next step to feeding them. Please help. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Im so glad the you stepped in when momma could not provide the proper nutrition for these babies. Below is the Puppy gruel recepie that is use for my babies. First grind up your puppy food kibble to at powder like constancy using either a food processor or blender. Than mix 1 can of evaporated milk & equal parts water add 1/3 can puppy can food together and mix well. Mix 1/4 to 1/2 Cup of the ground kibble and add some of the liquid mixture until it is at a smoothie like consistency. (Its best served warm). You can just warm up the liquid before adding it to the ground kibble. Use a glass pie plate or something low enough to them to get into and not tip over. As they get older you will want to thicken the mixture to more of a malt like consistency. Later when their teeth come in you can than take the liquid mixture and use is to moisten (soak) whole puppy kibble before switching them to all hard kibble. You will also want to introduce water. Have it available to them at all times and encourage drinking when ever possible. Hope this helps !!
