| Silk or Soft Is it possible to tell from a puppy coat which type of coat a yorkie will have as he/she matures into adulthood? For example my 8 going on 9 week old has a more long/thick coat which is slightly wavy while his litter mate has a more short/thin straight coat. Is this an example of one possibly having a silk coat and the other a soft coat?

| I'm no expert but from what I've read around here, and from experience watching Mandie's, it is really almost impossible to tell at such a young age. The coat texture changes so much throughout the first 6 months or so.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | It is quite difficult to tell with any accuracy, unless you are a long time breeder. Generally speaking if you look at the leg hair and it is sparse, that is one sign of a true silk coat to come in one day.

YT 2000 Club Member | I agree! I thought Tatiana would have a cotton coat because her hair matted so easily and very fluffy when she was young. She is now almost a year and her coat has changed so much over the months. It is so soft and doesn't matt. It is still fluffy and has some wave in it. I keep her fairly short in a puppy cut and her hair looks like a puppy who is a few months old. It is a wait and see with their coats and colors!

| You could very possible have one of each type.

| Bailey had a straight, silky coat right from the start. He had such thin, tan color on his head that he almost looked bald. Thank goodness he grew more hair as he got older and it is all tan now. He is now 2 and still has the same silky coat. The only thing that changed was the color; he was mostly black with a touch of tan, but now he is mostly tan with silver on his back. As he grew more grey, so did I. Thinking of getting blonde streaks myself to match him. Kidding! He most resembles the Australian Yorkie, than a Yorkshire Terrier breed. |

| Thanks everyone I'm so curious!! But the wait will be worth it and I'd be thrilled with either coat. Upon research I found a few threads on here that mentioned taking a photo (with flash) and the color of the eyes could be an indicator of the coat type. Both pups eyes were glowing blue so a possibility of silky coats...we shall see.
