| Are all puppies born with dew claws? I have a nine month old female who had her dew claws removed before she became a part of our family. I am now considering adding a little boy to our family and found one I really like. However, when I asked if the dew claws had been removed, the breeder said no. I asked in another email why not and she said that he didn't have any and that not all yorkies do. Just checking to see if this is normal. Thanks for any input! Amber |

| I could be wrong, but I think the breeder is not telling the truth. To the best of my knowledge, all Yorkies are born with dewclaws (or they develop a few days after birth). I would keep looking for another breeder. Looking forward to hearing what the breeders here say.

| According to Wikipedia, all dogs have dew claws Dogs always have dewclaws on the inside of the front legs and occasionally also on the hind legs.[1] Unlike front dewclaws, rear dewclaws tend to have little bone or muscle structure in most breeds. Sometimes some dogs will even have more than one dewclaw on the same paw; at least one of these dewclaws will be poorly connected to the leg and in this case it is often surgically removed. When a dog has extra dewclaws in addition to the usual one on each front leg, the dog is said to be double dewclawed. There is some debate about whether a dewclaw helps dogs to gain traction when they run because in some dogs, the dewclaw makes contact when they are running and the nail on the dewclaw often wears down in the same way that the nails on their other toes do, from contact with the ground. However, in many dogs the dewclaws never make contact with the ground; in this case, the dewclaw's nail never wears away, and it is then often trimmed to keep it to a safe length.

| Thanks for the replies. From the pictures of this puppy, I am just in love with this little guy (of course want to make sure he is just right before I go look in person... not sure I would ever be able to say no to any puppy!) I just have some hesitance because of this dew claw thing. Does anyone have experience with having dogs with them not removed? Do they usually only have front or back? What is the standard removal? I have read of them getting hung on something and bleeding and causing pain and certainly would never want this. A quick google was misleading for I found some info that supported that some dogs are simply not born with them... As always, I appreciate any feedback and love the knowledge I get from here! |

| There are different methods for dew claw removal, like there are for tail docking. I believe they are done at the same time. Having dew claws remain can be trouble. They can get injured or infected. You may want to re-post in the breeders' section to ask. I find this highly suspicious relative to the breeder you are looking at. Keep your eyes open.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | All puppies are born with dew claws and most breeders will have them remove in order to save the dog from having issues with them later on. They can be hurt if they get snagged on the carpet, colors or chains (for larger breeds). They can be removal at an older age but I cant see putting the dog through that and putting the cost of having it done onto the owners when it is such a simple thing to have done. It is so much easier and less expensive just to have them done as a pup. I as a breeder always have them removed. Its something that I feel as a breeder is our responsibility to have done. It becomes a matter of safety and doing what I can to prevent any harm to come to them.

| Yeah my girl has them, I don't know what the laws are here regarding removal since I'm in the UK and things like cropping and tail docking are illegal but I'm sure I've heard of people here having the vets do dewclaws to bigger dogs and spaniels. I don't find them bothersome, I keep them clipped and they hide behind my baby girl's hair and don't cause her any pain or discomfort. She only has a single dew claw on each front leg though, and they sit very close to her leg and don't snag on stuff, some dogs grow 2 or they grow out in awkward positions which can cause big issues. I think it's not as common here for pups to have them removed like it is out there because you don't really hear about it often. I know where I live that it's illegal for anyone to do it at home, a vet has to surgically do it. Last edited by Rainbows; 12-13-2013 at 08:42 AM. |

| I have never had a litter that did not have dew claws ..I have had over 30 . They have to be done at 2 days old ..It only costs like 15 dollars to do and can not do it when dog is older then its a major operation. If the breeder doesn't get them remove they are CHEAP!! and I would find another breeder what else are they not doing. When dog gets older the dew claw get snagged on your sweaters or blankets and sometime will get ripped off not pleasant for dog. You will be able to see and feel the dew claw it will be a bit higher up on the inside of paw . |

| Thanks for all the replies. As much as I hate to give up on this puppy, I feel that this is just too fishy to ignore. I searched and searched for my Chloe and eventually found just the right one, I know it will happen when it is right. It is just disappointing when I think I've found the one and something prevents me from it. I like to believe the best in people and will say that perhaps this breeder is bring honest, but I cannot find much support to believe this is the case. Amber |

| All dogs are born with dew claws. Wow. Please find a breeder that will allow you to come see the pups and the parents of the pups. A good breeder can be a source of a wealth of information you will need for your new pup. Your pup is going to be a member of your family hopefully for many years to come. If you have to take the time to drive a few hours in order to find the right one then go for it. Maybe find a good book about Yorkshire Terriers so no one will be able to pull the wool over your eyes about the purchase of your new family member. |
