| How do I get my little guy to go for walks & enjoy the car?? My 6mo old yorkie loves to play outside, sniff and investigate everything. I have a very large piece of property that we walk around and sniff everyday...but only on his terms. I try to get him to walk all the way to the end of my driveway where we check the mail, but once his paws hit the street, he freezes and doesn't want to walk any further. I want to take him for walks and get him out more but he's very stubborn. Any suggestions? PS he has all of his shots and rabies as well so he's safe to go for walks. And same thing goes for the car, he cries and cries in the car. I've tried putting him in his little carrier, tried without the carrier, tried in my lap. He finally deals with it after being in the car for about 20 minutes or so but by that time we have already reached our destination. Help! |

| I went through this with Max. He cried in the car his whole first year, now he loves the car. Part of the problem was he thought he could only pee on his pad at home. Once he learned he could go outside, that helped. Then I bought a doggy car seat. That solved the problem. Maturity probably helped too. Make sure car rides are to fun places, and not just the vet and groomer. For walks, use treats or toys to encourage him to leave your driveway. You may also employ the help of a family member or friend to stand 10 feet in front of your pup with the lure. If he moves forward, praise him happily. Practice every day and make it a fun routine, a goal for him to accomplish.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Galen cried all but the last 10 mins all the way down to my Moms, the first time driving distance. I stated taking him on short trips around town and giving him little pieces of treats. Now he even curls out and closes his eyes. I also have a doggie seat. I put some toys with him that he only gets in the car. Keep at it

| For walks I guess I had it really easy it sounds like, I just put the buddy belt on with his leash, carried him out o the sidewalk and away we walked. The car he loves to because I have heated seats ;-) my daughters pup did not want to walk, it's a maltipoo about the same size as Gizmo, and she had a standard harness on him. Well I had an extra buddy belt, so she brought Dash over here, we put the extra buddy belt on him instead of the other harness, took him out to the sidewalk with Gizmo, and Gizmo showed him how to walk and go potty. Dash is now walking like a champ :-) I say find a friend that has a dog to show your puppy. Your puppy should just naturally fall into to it by learning from the other dog :-) dogs like to do the same things as other dogs, so they like to watch and learn what dogs do :-) |

| Bella went through a phase when she wouldn't go past the end of the driveway. I purchased a stroller, put her in it, and wheeled her around the neighborhood. She loved it! Eventually she overcame her fear of walking past the end of the driveway, and now I can walk her around the neighborhood with no problems (when the weather is not sub-zero). |

| I would try to train him on the come command. Positive reinforcement will help as well as treats for a reward. As he walks with you and is getting the hang of it. Drop random treats as long as he is obiding by your commands. He will soon get the hang of it. It surely does help when you create that habit of following everywhere you go from the start. I have no problem walking Mickey without a leash on all our walks due to this method. I hope it helps. Consistency and patience are key tools in training.!
