| My pup LOVES to eat cat POOP I am finally getting my Yorkie pup trained to potty outside in our back yard. Thing is, I have a couple of stray cats and my pup has been coming in the house after being outside for a very short time and after about 10 minutes, he will vomit and it smells like the cat used my carpet for the litter box. Then he'll vomit two or three more times and it's just awful! It's a horrific out of this world smell. After some investigation, my husband, figured out the dog is outside eating the cats poop. The cats are pooping around the foundation of my home. Today, my husband shoveled all the cat poop he could find and raked the leaves to get all the cat poop up. We live in DFW and just had a major ice storm and this hasn't been the most pleasant task. Better than smelling a house full of cat poop though. We took one of the cats to the shelter, as it was a stray with a healed up broken leg, because she was thought to be the culprit. Well, apparently not. Now we're going to have to round up the other two strays and take them to the shelter too. We constantly have to deal with stray cats in our neighborhood. One of the newer stray cats is little older than a kitten and is really tame and we were hoping to keep it as a pet, take it to the vet to get neutered, and let him be a play mate for Bandit but we believe Bandit follows him around and finds the poop some how and eats it! Cause it just happened again!!! At my wits end. Why do dogs eat cat poop? Now do I have to worry about my dog getting worms?? Help, any advice greatly appreciated.

| Well this may explain why he was sick. Like you had posted on the Sick and Injured Forum. Yes your dog could get worms from eating cat poop and can also get many other things as well. From the sound of it, you are not outside with him when he is out there. You need to be with him at all times to watch him. I never let mine out alone, I am with them at all times, even tho we do have six foot fenced in yard.

| Isn't there a supplement you can give them to make poo taste bad?? Or do you have to give that to the animal who's poo they are eating?? I never leave my boys outside unattended....too many things can happen. They can eat something bad...someone can steal them....they can get stung by a bee or something else that can cause them to have an allergic reaction...wild animals can get them...a wild cat can even hurt them. When I lived where I had a fenced in yard and a sliding glass door, I used to let Prince outside and he rarely went 3 feet off the cemented area. There was a wild cat next door and she had a kitten and they liked to come over and hide in my back yard in the bushes. Anyways...one day I let Prince out the back door and neither Prince or I had seen the momma cat because she was around the corner. The next thing I know Prince is running towards the house, yelping, with the cat attached to his butt. The kitten was hiding in the weeds by the chimney and we didn't see her and momma cat thought he got too close. Thank goodness she just got his rear end, because I am sure she could have done way more damage. The neighbor next door who had the wild cat said a pit bull lived at the house before we did and it jumped the fence and killed one of her cats. It was a really good reminder of how that fence wasn't really secure....even though it was your avg. chain link fence you find around most yards. If a pitbull could jump out, one could easily jump in and kill my pup as well |

Like in the AM, I will let him out and sit at the patio door on the floor so I can see him at all times. If he gets out of my sight, I'll pull the door open and yell at him and he minds me for the most part and knows where he is suppose to go. But today, I let him out and sit at the door. He ran on the opposite side of the house (where the poop usually is) but my husband told me he picked it all up. I can't go out with him just anytime. but I watch him very closely. Mostly cause I'm busy getting ready for work. The times I go out with him, he'll spend 30 minutes and never do anything!

| Its bc cat food is high in protein. Feeding a high quality food often times helps. Or giving the cats a digestible formula that prevents ingestion of feces. They sell it at pet stores.

| There are certain garden centers and online stores that sell a repellant that you can put in your garden area to keep cats and other animals away. Usually cats look for and area that has soft ground like a garden that has been worked. They don't dig in hard ground. We have stray and feral cats all around my property but have never had issues with Gracie getting into anything since she is always with someone when she is outside. I do have indoor cats and we have a large covered litter box that Gracie cannot get into. I don't know what it is about kitty poo but I have never met a dog that is not attracted to it. It is a disgusting thing but there are ways to deal with the issue. You might consider keeping a close eye on your little guy when he is outside to make sure he is not out there looking for kitty snacks. If you have a fenced yard you may be able to do something with your fence that will help keep the cats out. |

| Much of the time, I take P-nut out in the back with a leash on. He obeys the "leave it" command for anything but cat poop. He's not 100% on that and I can't risk him getting into it. I think that's his only truly horrible "habit." Sooooooo gross! |

| Well, not that it's any real consolidation, but, alas, you are not alone. We talked with our vet about this and she said some dogs just like to eat poop. She said we could try a product to make the poo smell bad, like "Forbid" or some of the others, but it's hit or miss if any of those will work. And yes, you have to give it to the animal whose poo he is eating. A friend with the same problem said her vet recommended using "Accent" flavor enhancer to make the poos smell bad. My sister has a 14 yo dog who likes the poo when they are frozen. Our little Biewer loves them "fresh". And even being outside with them (we have 3 dogs), I can't always keep him from getting to the "goodies" first (when one of the other 2 have gone) and getting a bite. I try to keep him in when I think the other 2 need to poo, but I am not always successful. I keep hoping he will outgrow this fondness. Only time will tell. |

| My Biewer also seems to like eating it... seen him snuffling through grass to get to some dried ones. I always have him on a leash so I can stop him at any time. If he does - its brushing time after the walk... crazy dogs! lol |

| That's one reason why I am sorta against another cat. Keeping Charlie from eating the poop is a hard job! |
