| Front Legs Bowed Hi all, My Mork is 12 weeks old and her front legs are VERY bowed. I've taken her to the Vet and the Vet has recommended a consultation with an Orthopedic Surgeon. She has an appointment for Wednesday and her legs appear to be getting better (but that could be wishful thinking on my part). I'm wondering if others here have had Yorkies with front legs that are bowed and what have been the causes? She doesn't appear to be in pain and plays like a crazy puppy. However, I'm still concerned about long term damage, I'm worried that she is in more pain than she is letting on, and I'm worried I won't be able to afford the care she needs. Is it common for Yorkie puppies to have front legs that are bowed? What are the normal causes of this? Thanks

| My Maggie's front legs are so bowed my daughter teases me saying she looks like a bull dog. I have not taken her to have them checked. She's five and has had no problems. She doesn't appear to be in any pain and can run with the best of them. I would like to hear if your Orthopedic Surgeon is concerned.

| Update 12/3/2013 Mork's legs seem to be straightening up but I think she is still going to see the Orthopedic Surgeon tomorrow morning for a consultation. I want to be cautious.

| Maggie's legs have been bowed since day one. I asked the vet about it when she was a baby and he said it was the way she was groomed that made her legs looked bowed. However, her legs are bowed! I'll look for a picture that definitely shows it's not the way she's groomed...let me know what the Orthopedic Surgeon says, please!

| If Maggie is cut short or she's wet, the bowed legs are prominent:

| Update 12/4/2013 Mork saw the orthopedic surgeon today and I got some good news. She has normal bone development! Yay! She is still bow legged and the orthopedic surgeon said that she has slight (20%) bowing at the wrist. The orthopedic surgeon said she didn't need supplements, no special exercises and no vitamins. In fact, the orthopedic surgeon said that she should be treated as a normal puppy because she is a normal (even if she is a ridiculously cute) puppy. The orthopedic surgeon suggested that the cause had been poor nutrition before she became a part of my family. I'm just so glad that she isn't in pain and that she is going to be okay! I have been so worried about my little princess.

| I hope that based on the information you got from the orthopedic surgeon our little boy is okay, too. We got Spenser last December when we requested a senior Yorkie. He is 10 1/2 and looks like a tiny bull dog with a yorkie body. I am sad thinking that he had poor nutrition during his life. His both legs are very bowed. However, he is cute as a button. His "elbows" seem high and go out from his body. To be honest, I didn't ask the vet. On the first visit ,we learned that his blood work was terribly off resulting in bile acid test to an ultrasound to X-rays resulting in bladder surgery for stones. Maybe I should have them checked out, but he runs like the wind, rarely sits and seems pain-free. I also wonder if anything should be done at his age...... don't know. Just love my funny little borkie. Am I right? Gew |

My first guess would have been nutritional deficiency as a growing puppy. That being before you got her - sic from the breeder. And yes there could be a genetic component, hard to tell right now. However encouraging good muscular development is never ever amiss. And yes I think no supplements as their efficacy has not been proven. I have somewhere on here a whole detailed response on some exercises you can do with your puppy. I just have to find it.

| Most likely luxatimg patela. We thaf issue with Abbie. It took hee loksing 3 lbs to gef hers corrected. No surgery required. Ws also put in a pool in our new house ans she goes swimming almost daiy when tbe weathef is nice. I know that many people may nog have accesz to a pool, but a garden tub will work as well. It has reallyhelped her joints. We also live in a gated communitg witb a lot of green space and walking paths which we use daily. |
