boys and marking...

After reading a post, it got me thinking... after the males are neutered, do they still mark their territory?? George our schnauzer lives outside, but he has been neutered, and only comes in the visit from time to time. I was thinking of getting a girl dog, so she would not mark, but if a male dog is fixed and then not able to mark, perhaps I might get a boy dog...

both of our cats are boys and have been neutered and they do not mark inside the house.... I just haven't been around boy dogs inside a house before.... that is why I ask my silly question...

This is just my opinion, it depends on the training and the amount of time you put into it. My boy dog was a marker when he first came home. His breeder allowed it, masking the problem with a belly band. I put my all into training him not to, which included having him fixed. He learned to not mark inside, BUT I let him mark on everything outside during our walks. I've also seen A LOT of girl dogs mark too, to the point where they also lift their legs. Some pups just have that drive more than others.

PS it's not a silly question. I wouldn't want to live in a smelly house either.

All of my babies stopped marking inside the house once neutered. Draco has just started around my apartment, and I correct him so it's nearly as much, I'm just going through peepads a little faster. He's to be neutered after xmas.
After getting neutered my pets wouldn't do it indoors and less frequent on walks. Like right now Draco seems obsessed with marking at the dog park, so much that he'll stop mid playing to mark a tree he's already marked. My pom did the same thing, after neutering he was able to enjoy the park more.
But like stated above some just have the urge more than others but it's something that can be taken care of, and have totally seen female dogs at the dog park that mark.

It may be strange but my boy is not neutered at almost 7 months and only marks outside (so far). My husband had a lab when he was younger and he marked even after being fixed.

Girl dogs can mark too. Neutering does not guarantee that a dog won't mark. My neutered boys mark outdoors on walks. I inadvertently encouraged this by praising them for pottying outdoors. I don't mind as long as they don't do it inside.

It's a matter of training.

I hope George, your Schnauzer, has adequate shelter outdoors. Is there a reason he doesn't live indoors with you?

Jackson will mark outdoors, but he has never marked inside. He tried once in someones house where their dogs have accidents, but that was the only time I had seen him try. He was neutered at 7 months.

My son has a black lab and she is a horrible marker. Only difference is, she doesn't hike her leg up. ETA: She's been fixed for a long time and is 14 years old.

I was wondering the same thing on the Schnauzer. Seems kinda sad he has to spend his life outside.

My dogs mark...it's mainly my older male who was used for stud service for the first 7 years of his life. He lifts his leg outside, but he's also done it in my house. He's peed on my couch and my trash can and even his own dog bed. A few weeks ago I watched him walk over and pee on my bathrobe that was hanging by the door and he did it right in front of me!!

Just recently, his former owner informed my mom that he wore a belly band around her house. I was never told this when I got him...but it would explain why he piddled everywhere. He has gotten better over the years....but he still occasionally has issues. If fact...Last night...someone...and I am fairly certain it was him....decided to pee on my bed!!! GRRR.....


It's funny...I always have other yorkie owners coming up to me asking how I potty trained my dogs. Just a few days ago on Black Friday, I had the boys in Petsmart and another owner came up with her 5 month old female and she asked me how I did it. Apparently her dog will pee, but not poo on a pee pad. I wish I had better advice than "go invest in a carpet cleaner" but that's really the best advice I have for them.

I am not sure my boys will ever grow out of it. Since I've never owned a girl, I can't really say Girls are easier or harder to potty train either. I just know that most people I know personally that have yorkies and small dogs in general, seem to have potty issues. I also know that lots of people have been successful on here with potty training. Maybe certain lines of yorkies are better at it than others....IDK!! But if I had a dollar for every time my dogs used the bathroom in an inappropriate place, I'd be rich!!

On a good note....we had no accidents when I went home to my dad on Thanksgiving!! Its the first time in I can't remember how long!! Just to give you an idea of how bad it is...the boys acutally have homemade washable diapers that I keep at my dads house for when they come visit!!

ZoE is a girl and she marks outside in our yard and when we go for walks. She sniffs (where I think other animals/dogs have been) and then squats & pees on the area. As long as she's doing it outside and consistently goes on her potty pads inside, I don't have a problem with it....it's what dogs do!

I too hope your schnauzer has adequate shelter for the coming winter.

My Sammy does not mark at all in our house at all , he is 2 yrs old and has been good since trained to go outside. However if he goes into someones house where their pets have peed on the floor he will lift his leg but only in those specific homes that smell like a kennel

This is weird. My boys do not mark the couch or the chairs but if I lay a rug down or one for them to lay on they will mark that. If I put a soft bed or a blanket in their crate they mark it. Dog gone it! I get so upset. I think they get mad if I go out and just pee on it. So I pick up all the rugs. No marking! Very unpredictable behavior.

George is neutered, he does mark outside if that's what you call a drip or two on a lamppost when we go walking but never inside.

The schnauzer has the whole garage to himself, plus he wears his fur on the Solly side. When it gets chilly out, he wears a hoodie. When it gets really cold with winter mix, ice or snow, he comes in the house. I meant wooly, not Solly side. He also has a ton of blankets and stuff in the garage. We tired to housebreaker him, but he would constantly puddle the floor and not bark to let us know, we even tried to crate train with no improvement.

When it comes to potty training, or marking training for that matter, seems to be a battle of wills. We have to out stubborn the stubborn. He's stubborn and doesn't want to be potty trained, well we just have to be extra stubborn and not give in.
