| Porky Yorkie Question Hi all, It seems like Louie is getting a tad "chubby" and I dont understand it because I am very careful what I give him. He eats maybe 3 small meals a day if that because sometimes he doesnt seem like he eats. I was wondering if maybe the bones that I give him at night are making him gain weight. I give him some kind of bone every night at bed time because I go to bed maybe at 9 or so and he sleeps with me so it keeps him busy for some time. The bones I give him are either "busy bones" for small to med. dogs, or a small milk bone or the dental type. hmmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder if they are really fattening. Do any of you think this is why?

| If he is 1 year old why are you feeding him 3X a day. Does he eat everything each time you put down his food? Maybe its time to cut back to only 2X a day

| Yeah, you could probably cut down to 2 meals a day. I used to feed Macey 2 meals a day, and she was fine with that. I actually don't think she would have wanted to eat 3! She never wanted to eat unless I sat on the floor and hand fed her. She was so spoiled!

| Over a year old and weighs 5 1/2 pounds????? This is definitely not an overweight dog -- unless he was meant to be 3 or 4 pounds and weighs more than he should. What causes you to think he is overweight???? Carol Jean |

| I know 5.5 lbs is NOT big and I am not one of those nuts who just has to have a 1 lb. dog. The way Louies body looks leads me to believe that he is a chubba. He is very short and tiny but very bulky lately and he kind of waddles lately. Dont get me wrong HE IS ADORABLE! I just want him to be healthy and not have any problems. But thanks for the advice guys. I did not know that you were suppose to feed an adult 2 times a day and not 3. I dont give him a ton though. How much would be the right amount? I also have Bella who is about 5 months old, How much should I be feeding her? Thanks all!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I've read that some people have REALLY good luck adding steamed green beans to their food. It acts as a filler. I read about a woman who did it and her yorkie actually lost a pound - you would know if your baby is a little chubbo by feeling for the ribs - if you CAN'T feel the outline of them - then someone is packing a bit extra......It doesn't mean you want smaller - it means you want HEALTHY. |

My dogs have free choice of Nutro puppy or adult kibble and water at all times and they never overeat and if I say so myself, have great teeth from the dry food.My vet and others constantly ask "How do you get teeth like that?". They get homemade liver treats for training and Yes sometimes just because they have adorable faces but are never overweight. Opps-sorry-must be all that coffee I just drank didn't mean to be so long winded here.

| Thanks for the reply Villette. I always welcome your advice. Yeah, Im not really feeling the ribs lately. I think Im going to cut down on the bones that I give him because they really are quite large and they are meaty inside, and he seems to get really full after munching on one of those and then wont really eat good during the day. Have you ever given yours the "busy bone" or the "jumbone" ? Louie loves those. I gave him something else last nite to chew on instead though so hopefully I can get him away from those a litte more. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

| If you can feel your Porky Yorkie's ribs under his skin when you run your hands down his sides then he probably isn't Porky. At just over a year his body is still maturing and although you don't want him to be overweight, you do want him to have a slight fat reserve so draw on. If only I had that problem....... my little boy, Peppy is 16 months old and I would like to see him gain about 4 to 8 ounces. He weighs 3.25 lbs. on a good day. He eats two good meals a day (1/4 cup of Innova Evo mixed with a teaspoon of gravy as a flavor enhancer) and has free choice kibble available for snacking at all times, but he burns all of his calories being "man of the house" keeping the girls in line. |

| Thanks Helen for you response. I have been giving mine nutro also and also the chicken soup brand. Louie has also been getting into Bella's "puppy food" too. I put adult out for him and the puppy out for her. Maybe that AND the Bones have something to do with it. Anyways thanks again!

| For chewing, I give my furkids bones from beef shanks. I have the butcher cut the shanks between 1/2 and 3/4" thick. It is a PERFECT size bone for Yorkies -- they absolutely CANNOT swallow them, they do not splinter and I have NEVER EVER known one to actually chew off pieces. The bones are very thick and hollow on the inside. I use beef shanks to make soup, after they are cooked, I wash them thoroughly and dry them and WHAT A TREAT! I make a lot of soup in the winter so there are beef shank bones all over the house. LOL |

| TY, i am going to try those shank bones, as soon as i can get myself unburied from all of this snow that we are getting! I think that might be another reason for the weight gain. We have not gone for any walks since winter began! Tooo Cold!

| If you can't feel his ribs when you gently stroke your hands down his sides (down press hard) then he's a bit chubby. Syd gets chubby in the winter because we can't walk her. And there just isn't anything I can do about it. I didn't look to see where you live before I hit "reply" , but if it's warm there try taking him for daily walks. That should melt the weight right off of him. And maybe switch to Nylabones instead. |
