YorkieTalk Newbie! | Bloody stool, doesn't eat, indigestion issues Hi, my 6 yr old t-cup yorkee hasn't eaten in two days, her stomach is making sounds of indigestion, she had a dark/bloody stool that was very loose, she seems uncomfortable and doesn't want anything...I gave her some indigestion chewable a similar to peptobsmall and keep giving her lots of water through a syringe because she wouldn't drink herself. She's had indigestion problems in the past, had x rays done, took all kinds of meds her vets have been prescribing but this is an ongoing issue for a couple of yrs. comes and goes off and on. Tried switching her to different foods-works for a while but then goes back to same problems. She's on Fromm's game bird grain free diet-it's been working ok but not anymore I guess. Maybe she's allergic, maybe she eats something off the floor, I don't know anymore! Please help!!!! |

| I would go straight to the vet. Right now like, if he's pooping blood. But I am no expert. I hope your baby is ok. |

| If your pup is having bloody stool, there is a chance that she has internal bleeding. BTW....Pepto Bismol can cause dark stool...not bloody, but it will look black. I thought my pup had internal bleeding until I realized it was black pepto poop. With the exception of the bloody stool, your pup's issues sound similar to my boys. He will eat his dog food and be fine for a while and then something unknown will upset his stomach. It gurgles loudly and I can tell he's not feeling good because he won't eat his breakfast and he's clingy. Usually by dinner, he will eat though...and these bouts are usually accompanied by loose stool...and sometimes this will go on for a few days to a week. In our case...I think there are few contributing factors. My pup has had sludge in his gall bladder and mild pancreatitis....but I am also starting to think that he has IBS as well. Eating people food or too much of anything can bring it on as can a change of food if it's done to fast...stress or anxiety is also a major trigger...and sometimes, I have no idea what causes it. His tummy aches will come out of nowhere. A few days ago was thanksgiving...did anyone feed your pup??? Did she have any table food?? Did a lot of people come over to your house?? Was she left alone when she's used to having her family around her constantly or was she boarded?? Did she ride in the car anywhere when she's not used to riding?? Did anything happen outside of her normal routine?? All the above could trigger an upset....if she ate something she's not supposed to or got stressed out or anxious...it could have brought it on. Luckily, my boys episodes have been fewer and farther between because we no longer change foods and I am very careful with what I feed him. I also try to keep his stress level low. I've got a new med to treat IBS, but I haven't tried it yet because he hasn't had a bad enough flair up for me to use it. |

| Please take her to the vet today. Sounds like she may have gotten a bone or something lodged. Bloody stool is a sign she needs a vet asap. Praying for her.

| If the blood is fresh, bright red, it means there's a problem in the large intestines &/or colon. Is there any mucus w/the bloody poop? Mucus means there's inflammation & the intestinal lining is being expelled. If there's both mucus & blood, it's probably colitis. I really like Fromm, but it uses too many ingredients in their food esp the grain free versions like game bird. I think your pup is better off w/a limited ingredient diet. Much easier to figure out if she has any negative reactions to the food. Colitis pups do well on a strict low fat high fiber diet. She'll probably need vitamin B shot & any sub-q fluids if she's dehydrated along w/antibiotics. Hope it all goes well @ the vet! If this has been going on for years, is that also the blood in poop? Have hookworms been ruled out?

| Oh sawwie, just read your post again & it says dark bloody stool (disregard my post above, except for going on a limited ingredient diet). That means the blood is from the upper intestinal tract &/or the stomach. I don't think you should be giving her OTC meds (was it pepcid?), unless the vet ok'ed it. Could she have eaten something other than her reg food to cause stomach upset? I hope it didn't contain any onions, as that is toxic in any form for dogs!

| I just read your blog & it seems like the vets are leaning towards food allergies? My Turbo has food intolerance, he throws up & somtimes has soft to runny poopies. He never had blood in poop tho. We did a test called NutriScan which shows what foods he's intolerant/ sensitive to. It seems like she might have IBD, something is going on there...it's also related to food, so wondering if this test will be beneficial for your girl. Pet Sensitivity & Intolerance Test by Dr. Dodds for the 24 Most Commonly Ingested Foods Thanks for the heads up!

YT 2000 Club Member | dog It seems the dog foods today can cause a lot of stomach trouble. Perhaps you should home cook for her. Some people do this, only give them food they cooked. You would have to find some reciepes from people who do this but if it works it is worth it. I just feed mine wellness dog food. My sister's golden ret. was eating Costco food and got a lot of ear gunk, now on wellness it is gone. So food can be the cause of problems. |

My vet prescribed metronidazole(flagyl). I know it's an antibiotic that's supposed to help IBD and IBS both... Here is a good link that talks about Colitis or IBD~ Canine Inflammatory Bowel Disease IBD - Chronic Diarrhea and Vomiting in Your Dog Here is another link of his that talks about diet.... Home Cooked Pet Diets,Home Made Recipes And Pet Nutrition I am going to post the above link in it's own thread as well as it seems to have some great information on how on the appropriate diets for pets with chronic illnesses. | |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Indigestion, bloody stool, not eating Thanks so much for your response! I switched her to Canine Caviar -Holoistic Wild Ocean (wild herring) that's gluten and grain free and is a limited ingredient diet. She's been on it for three days now and seems to like it. I do mix in about 1/2 of tea spoon of canned pumpkin to help digesting while making a switch from the food she was doing well on for about a yr (Fromm's gamebird-grain free). However, the new food comes in a larger kibble, and I don't really like that at all as my Cleo is only 4 lbs and should eat only small kibble foods to help digest it better...but I'm not a pro, and it's only my personal beliefs. She doesn't seem to have bloody stools anymore but they seem to be too dry as compared to what it used to look like when things were good. I also bought Acana's lamb and brown rice that's grain free (not gluten free) and is also a limited ingredients diet that offers small kibble but decided to try her on the Canine Caviar's holistic one first. Not sure what is better for her - I just don't like larger kibble for her that's with the holistic diet...I don't know if she needs to be on gluten and/or grain free diets - just trying to rule out what may be the cause and based on research, many suggest a LID to rule out certain proteins...any thoughts/suggestion? Thanks!!! |

| A dog that has not eaten for two days needs to see the vet. As your dog ages these problems tend to worsen. If your vet is doing a trial and error type of system I would look for another vet. Testing can be expensive but it is better to have the appropriate tests done and get it over with than to play around with an unknown problem for years and never find an answer. Bloody stools do indicate a sever irritation of the digestive tract. If you don't have anyone slipping your dog treats or foods she should not have then she is probably able to become stabilized for a time but after a while her ability to tolerate the problem is just overwhelmed. As she ages this ability to tolerate the problem gets diminished. I hope you can find a good vet that will help you to pinpoint exactly what the problem is and how to deal with it. |
