| Territorial Yorkie What to do? Our little foster boy is not friendly with our friends who come to visit. He bit at one lady on her jeans as she walked by him a few different times. He bit my other friends hand. Thinking Bailey May have some issues. He adores us, his family. Follows me arounds, sits by me and sleeps at the foot of the bed , but we can't have this. Do terriers in general have some issues like this? He probably wasn't trained well as a puppy. He is almost 5 now. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I may not be the just the right person to be advising you, since I support this type activity, BUT, with my Males only. I think that Yorkies in general are quite, one Person orientated, protective and territorial. So, it's not hard for one to migrate toward an intense need to do those things. However, my Females are not that way (as much) and I think it's because I continually expose them to strangers/situations, where they become more acceptant to what the Males consider violations. In fact, when I have guests over, I put my Males up in their room, and allow the Females to socialize. I want to maintain this strong difference in their demeanor. It's possible that more frequent exposure to strangers with appropriate verbal corrections, or, Obedience Training may be avenues.

| Gizmo has this problem sometimes if he is not properly introduced to someone or if he gets overwhelmed with too many people coming over. What we usually do is put up a baby gate between gizmo and whomever is coming over and then give them treats. We have the person give a treat, then require Gizmo to do a trick ; sit, down, dance or shake. This puts the person in a position of dominance by making the dog do the action to earn the treat. After that he usually does not get aggressive. With Gizmo at least we only have to do this the first time a person comes over, the next time he is fine. Keep us updated on how it goes. |

| As soon as he starts this type of behavior, pick him up and put him in a room or other spot by himself. Then, after just a few minutes, let him out and watch him closely. If he does it again, back to jail. When he comes out and behaves, give him lots of praise. They are smart and will quickly learn that unacceptable behaviors will take them away from who they want to be with. You must be quick and be consistent for it to work. He needs to know he cannot be around people if he is biting.

| we have been asking visitors to give treats and he does ok but then when they get up to move he "yells" at them and nips at their legs to sit down. He is only like this with new people. when my friend hurried through the house Bailey thought he was running to escape and he chased him. Like you would expect a dog to chase the paperboy. we think we will put him up tonight as we are having company over who don't like dogs to start with so wouldn't never assist with training of the dogs. |
