Getting up in the Night

Ok, I have a yorkie girl that will be 21 weeks tomorrow and I am still getting up in the night with her. Sometimes every 2 hrs. I usually don't go to bed until 11 and she goes outside before we head that way. How can I stop her from getting up all the time.

21 weeks.. so she's about 5 months? If she's small and getting up in the middle of the nights to go pee, she probably can't help it. Smaller they are, smaller their bladder. I think the trips in middle of the night will lessen as she gets bigger and older.

I guess another way to approach this is to leave a pad in the room and let her go there. But then, that might confuse her....

Yes she is 5 months old, and is weighing in at 2 lbs 3 ounces now. I don't use the puppy pads anymore since she is doing so well with her housebreaking now. I use a puppy playpen or a kennel at night.

Mine is 10 years old and I get up at least 2x a night with him. I've tried to take his water away before bed but I feel bad because he does like to get up to drink at night...which I am sure contributes to his pottying.

Every 2 hours does seem excessive. At that age, I think Jackson was still occasionally going out in the middle of the night but it was only once. Is she actually going pee every time? That's a tough one. Does she have water available to her all night?

Is she in your bed or a crate, etc? Honestly, she's still a bit young, but I would start to get a bit 'firm' with her, and by firm, I simply mean tell her 'no' or 'go back to bed' etc. Jackson quickly learned that when I want to sleep, I tell him to 'no, go lay back down'. I can tell when he REALLY has to go, and when he doesn't. You'll begin to learn, too. I would try lessening them. If she wakes up once, take her out, and by all means let her go. But if she pulls it again 2 hours later, I would ignore or tell her no.

OMG you're a better person than I. Sleep is something that you don't mess with me with me... I would never be getting up twice for my dog to use the bathroom (unless there was a health issue) especially when I don't even have to that often lol. Jackson has water available to him all night too and occasionally drinks some. He will often sleep for 10-12 hours through the night.

Zoey's 5.5 lbs and just turned 3... I let them have one last drink if they want before heading to bed. I also leave a pad in their "room" in case they do have to potty. It's rare but she does pee in the middle of the night sometimes.

Like Britster asked, is she actually peeing when she wakes you to go out? Does she pee that often during the daytime as well? If I remember correctly, Zoey used to pee few times a night when she was young but then, she just peed often throughout the day. It gradually lessened as she got older/bigger.

I usually put some fresh cold water before bed time in case they want to drink before going to bed. If for some reason they opt and decide AFTER I close the gate, they'll signal me. (I sleep upstairs and they're downstairs) Then I'll let them out for a quick drink.

If you feel it's too excessive even for her age/size, then I think you should visit the vet and get her checked out. Always better to be safe then sorry...

I actually have stopped giving her water by a certain time at night just that she will sleep but so far hasn't worked.

And yes everytime she gets up she is going one or the other. I have talked with our vet and she said to pull up her water and also said not to feed her after 5pm so that she will sleep thru the night. I love her so much but I am so tired.

She seems pretty young and small have you tried potty pad training her so you could just leave her a pad for her to go on at night? Callie would wake me up a few times a night at that age. I do not agree with picking food up for a small puppy because then you really really have to watch them hard for hypoglycemic issues and you can't when your sleeping. Also not a big fan of picking up water I mean how would you like to no be able to drink about a certain time? This is kinda normal for puppy in my opinion there like new born babies.

Jackson and Callie have way to much in common lol Callie can sleep for 10-12 hours too with no problems my mom calls her a fuzzy me lol because I can do the same thing

I have a 1 YO that weighs a little over 3 lbs and she still gets up at about 3:00 to go potty. She has her little potty pen set up in the house for the winter so she doesn't get cold plus it helps keep mom warm, too!!

As far as picking up her food at a certain time, she has access to her food all day. I am just trying this to see if she stops getting up in the night. She gets treats when she goes potty outside. And believe me I watch her very closely. And as far as her water I leave that down until like 8 or so. And I do let her have some before we go to bed. I am not that mean. I am listening to what my vet said just to see if it works.

Does he specialize in small dogs because they are more at risk for hypoglycemia and have smaller bladders? I have had this same issues with all the pups I have had growing up except for one that was a larger breed that we got when she was a bit older around 7 or 8 months.

I never left food out overnight... for any of our pups, one of which was very small and we got at 6 weeks. Most healthy pups are not going to die of hypo from not eating throughout the night. Pups need to learn to sleep through the night eventually and if you let it keep going on, they will get into the habit. With that said, 5 months is still a young pup. I wouldn't be worried about once a night, but the every 2hrs just seems a lot! I would think that if this is still going on by 8 or 9 months, I'd be concerned.

Also, how much exercise if the pup getting? I know when Jackson gets a lot of activity, mental and physical, throughout the day, he is more likely to just pass out for long periods of time.

I am not sure how I feel about the small bladder excuse ppl give for small dogs. I mean yes obviously their bladders are smaller than big dogs, but they're proportionate to their size. They are also eating and drinking less than a big dog? So logically, I am just not sure how that makes sense as to why they can't hold it as long...? lol... unless I am missing something.
