| Microchip or tattoo??? I have a question on which is better - microchipping or a tattoo? My concern is with a chip it is not visable or obvious, so if you lose a pup and someone finds him/her and decides to keep the baby and takes it to a vet and doesn't reveal that this was a find not a buy then there is no reason a vet would think to check for a chip. Where as if there is a tatoo it is more visable and likely to be found and then there may at least be a question or two asked of the person which may reveal something to the vet. I don't know we have three yorkies that have neither and was just looking for any advice on the subject. Thank you for any input |

| I have microchips on my dogs but wont hair grow over where the tatoo is anyway? I would think the tatoo would be better but if there is hair over it whose gonna see it.

| Microchip or Tattoo They put it on the belly somewhere where hair can't cover it as easily so if they have a vet who really does a good complete exam they are more likely to see it. I also had a thought that maybe both might be the way to go to cover more bases. |

| If its on the belly then I would get the tatoo. You could also get both if you wanted to.

| I've been stuggling with whether to get microchips or not. If someone actually steals your dog, are they going to take them to a vet? AND, I for one, have never seen my vet whip out a microchip scanner to see if my dogs are actually mine. I know if they did get out without their ID and got picked up by the animal shelter, they would likely check. If someone does steal your dog and it gets scanned with your name on it, don't you think they would say, "I just bought this dog and the info hasn't been changed yet". I don't know. What I would REALLY like is that pet GPS system, but boy is it expensive. I was sure wishing for it when Pippa ran away last year though!

| Hallie was a rescue and she has a tattoo in her ear from her previous owners. She is almost 4 and it has faded so much it is barely visible anymore. That could be a result of how it was done, where it was done, or both. I'm not sure about the belly tattoos but I just wanted to let you know. |

| I guess the question I would ask is how the dogs that are tattooed are registrated. The more modern thinking is the micro-chip which animal control has, vets have and humane societies have. They also can go into a large data base or call the companies to see if it is registered. Very few people tattoo anymore. Also if someone stole your dog then they would be on their guard because they could see the tatoo but with the chip they might be dumb enough not to realize it is in the dog. I could be wrong but I think AKC required the chip now and not tattoo's. How do they tattoo the dog? The chip takes seconds and I cannot imagine the pain of it being done on the belly

| I was told by my vet both. Tatto in ear and chip. My one girl was both but as my other came to me fixed she only was a chip. By the way if I could get GPS on them I would, we travel a ton and the tatto would be of little help out of country, let alone out of province. Joy |

| I think both to be safe. The tatoo is done when the baby goes in for dentals or altering while the dog is anesthetized. Many vets do not offer that service anymore, though..I have read that not all chips can be read with every scanner..There is a movement to universalize them but I don't think it is done yet. The ones from Europe are not found by most scanners, either.. |

| i was just watching videos on animal planet. they recommended that if your pet is tattooed, that it be done on the inner thigh of the hind legs since it's readily visible and not very removable, like the ears, where a thief can clip part of the ear to remove the tattoo. the tattoo can be registered like the microchip with a number of national and international registeries. "tatoo-a-pet" is one, "National Dog Registry" is another. |

My vet was said she be happy to tatto when Tish goes in for a cleaning. She actually said she did not understand why the rescue did not do both as most vets do tattos for free when you have them altered. Joy | |

| The tatoo number can be altered... a one madeinto a seven, a 3 into an 8... but a chip cannot be altered, or removed! When my lil girl, Pebbles, was stolen, and we knew who had her, a microchip could have solved it it an instant! I will never forgive myself for not doing it for her! The police said that they could have escorted us both to the local pound who has both type scanners and they could scan the dog... that they would then be able to solve the dispute... but since I had no means of identification, I was screwed... I could not PROVE that this was infact my dog! This was before the studs were DNA'd... That could be a means of ID now... but thats if you know where your dog is! If it is out and wandering... is picked up by the county or animal control, they will scan the dog. Say you lose your dog and you contact every groomer in the area with a picture and reward offer.... your dog will eventually have to be groomed! When the offender finally takes them in and the groomer asks all of their first time questions, the red flag goes up and she gives you a call.... how do you prove its your dog? pictures won't do. Did you know that Labs face a monster fine if caught using dogs with Microchips or tatoos? Most labs don't ask where the dogs come from they just use brokers... but they will scan them all and check for tatoos, cause the State and Gov will when inspecting! The fine is like a million dollars...its crazy! So even if your dog is stolen for lab use, if it is chipped or Tattooed, it will not be used. I like the idea of having all of the protection you can, but the chip is my choice! I would not want a dog theif cutting of an ear or altering a tatoo, think of the pain! Yikes!
