Default New to yorkies

Hello my name is Ginger. I am new to this site and I think I posted my first post under video instead of general questions opps. I have a new foster Yorky who is five years old his name is Bailey. I am not sure how to care for his hair and I don't understand all is vocalizations. His one Eye seems red and has a little drainage. He is quite overweight with thyroid problems so we're trying to thin him down. It is amazing how clingy he is to me after I've had them only two weeks. I am quite familiar with dogs such as golden retrievers and doxies. I have never had a dog with growing hair so this is a new thing for me it seems to be sticking in his eyes a little bit more than he probably would like. By the way what is all this vocalization he does and snoring is this normal for them? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Welcome! Yay for you on fostering! I know more experienced members will have lots of great advice for you. You do need to brush him everyday. Maybe a trip to the groomer to get you started. Has he seen a vet for his eye?

Greetings Ginger, welcome to the Forum !
Yea, our little ones do grow hair like mad, and "IF" you want your little guy to have a long coat, you need to maintain it, however...

I do things with my guys which is relative rough and tumble compared to most here, and get them to the Groomer (about 3x yr) for a short trim. We go hunting and they get wet and muddy frequently. I'm more interested in the abilities of the Breed, than their appearance.

As far as the eye problem...
You probably should keep the Hair trimmed back until you can do a visit to the Vet. Sounds like that should be ASAP.

Vocalizations are just a start...
with what will no doubt be an amazing experience with the Yorkshire. I've frequently used terms like special, individual, clairvoyant, institutive and unique, when it comes to their personalities.

Having a Yorkie is more than just an association, it's an ADVENTURE !

Welcome again !

i hope he comes out of his shell. he has a lot of expressive looks but is somewhat reserved. he has had a rough time of it. He was in a dog pound when the rescue group found him. He was all matted up and scared. He lived with one foster who was over run with dogs, so now I have him. He is warming up to me, but I am sure wonders what in the world is going on. He had an extensive record of fairly good health care that was given to the dog pound, but not sure why the was left. He is not wild and crazy like my golden, but is so different. It is hard to figure him out.

Bailey has an appt. next Wednesday. I take him to the vet soon too. Do you think he will like green beans as suggested by other users? Canned??

Welcome to YT! Poor little guy! I hate to see them bounce around like that but am so glad you took him in. I'm sure the both of you will figure things out in time. This site is a really good place to start if you've never had a Yorkie and a good place to stay once you've gotten one!

Sure, fresh or canned for just about any Veggie (keep an eye on the wrong stuff list). But it depends on the individual.

Two of my guys LOVE String Beans, but My Adult Male won't touch them. It's just a personal issue with them.

PS:
Yea about this Forum !
It's special !

Yorkies are terriers and they are a bit different than most dogs. Yorkies in particular can be very emotional dogs and tend to get very attached to their people. I feel so bad for Bailey. It sounds like he has had his little heart broken more than once. They do tend to follow their people around. They just feel they are part of your family (pack) and expect to be treated just like anyone else in your family. They tend to pout when they fell left out.

Since he already has a thyroid problem diagnosed it is a good idea to have him closely checked by the vet. Getting him on the best quality food you can give him will be a big help. Since he is so much smaller than your Golden he may do better with a food made for little dogs. I buy my little girl all natural treats. We do raw feeding so I only buy freeze dried raw meat treats for her. She does appreciate an occasional piece of apple or other fruit or vegetable as a treat.

I'm sure Bailey will appreciate any personal attention you can give him. Playing fetch and going for walks are some of "our" favorite activities. Of course she is very good about watching a movie on my lap or sitting with me while I work on the computer. As long as she has the personal attention of someone she is a happy camper.

A good groomer who knows how to do a good job working on Yorkies would be really helpful to you. (Don't trust just anyone. There are a lot of bad "groomers" out there. There is no regulation of the fast growing small dog grooming industry.) I only use all natural shampoo and conditioners on Gracie. It makes a world of difference in how manageable the hair is between shampoos. I bathe her weekly because she sleeps in the bed and is always on the furniture with us. All natural products protect the skin and coat from being dried out and actually condition instead. I also use a spray conditioner on her hair when we do her daily grooming. The spray helps to keep the ends from tangeling. A good metal grooming comb and a small metal pin brush will help keep him looking good as well.

Hopefully you and Bailey will do well together. I hope he gets a forever home real soon.

Oh, sure here he is. He is so funny. Wants to be with me so much. He is a good boy. doesn't have accidents or get in to stuff. Just wants to be near me. Now my other two dogs, a puppy who is a mini doxie age 4 months stays in the TV room with our golden and they have a puppy gate and stay put. But Bailey, cries and cries to come be with me. Doesn't act like he spent anytime in a pound now. I gave him and the girls some apples for snack and they all seemed to like it.

For the eye issue... Maybe cleaning daily would help till you take him to the vet? Gerber baby water did wonders for Zoey. She had issues with eye boogies and had slight infection before. But it's gotten so much better since I've started using the baby water along with her daily grooming.

Thank you for fostering. I sort of wonder though... would you be able to let him go after you get attached to him? I know I won't be able to. I don't know how the foster do it!

Yorkies , from all the ones I have known, tend to be pretty clingy and funny thing is that the boys tend to latch to a female and girls to the male in the house. Gizmo is pretty independent, which it sounds like your little guy might not be but he always chooses to come be next to me when relaxing.

Gizmo loves to be around us too and if there is a gate or door in the way he tends to "talk" first then whine, basically trying to get our attention or guilt us into having him close. It always works

I also saw that you asked about the hair. We keep gizmo pretty short so that we do not need to brush him daily, more like weekly with his bath. So it just depends if you want the look and how much time you have to dedicate to the maintenance of it.

Let us know what the vet says about the eye. Sounds like he might have scratched it and it may be beginning to get infected or is trying to heal causing all the goop. Make sure you wipe it down it will turn hard as a rock in their hair and be so hard to get out.

Sounds like you are doing a great job with him and are looking for what is best. So great, he is one lucky little guy!

Default Bailey's eyes

Hello!! Mr. Bailey's eyes seem so much better after some daily cleaning. He is still going to the vet soon for thyroid level check and going to the groomers for a cut that he so needs. He was sitting on my lap and I was brushing him and whenever I stopped he cried or vocalized like a "baby" sound. i think he wanted me to keep brushing. He is funny. I think he tries to communicate to me sometimes??? I don't know. He does the same thing when I rub his head and then stop. It is like he is working himself up to vocalize then pop out comes this "sound".
