| Mother in law not cleaning eyes Hello. I am a new user. My mother in law, has 2 yorkies who I love as if they are my own fur baby. I need some advice. My mother in law refuses to clean their eyes. It drives me nuts!! Everytime I see them, they have the thick dark build up of goo. I tell her she should clean them, and yet she never does. Is there something I can tell her such as it could lead to eye medical problems? Please help. Thank You. |

| I've seen dogs that didn't have their eyes cleaned developed sore spots where the goop collected and hardened and stayed there for days. It's got to be uncomfortable to have that stuff riding in the lower end of the line of sight and ask her if she would like to walk around with that stuff in the corners of her eyes. If she wouldn't, she owes no less to her own dogs! Our dogs deserve no less than being well-kempt and avoiding cleaning the eyes is avoiding being a good owner. It's every bit as important as bathing, brushing, toenail clipping and tooth-brushing.

| We had a beagle that if you did not dry his he would get raw spots/sores plus he had staining. Sammy my moms yorkie gets crunchy ones and I am sure if they where not wiped away they would scratch his eye. Callie will try to wipe her own eyes if I don't and could possibly scratch her eye with her dew claw.

| I was told the gook is acidic and burns their skin. I don't know if it's true or not, but I'm not taking any chances.

| I'm surprised they don't have eye infections... When you suggest she clean the eyes, what does she say? Just "ok" so you'd get off her case? Maybe you should google some pictures of what CAN happen if she doesn't? Sometimes, visuals works wonders. It doesn't take long.. at least get a flea comb and comb them out.. I hope you're able to convince her for the pups sake... |

| It's true, it irritates the skin underneath & when the eye boogers come off, it will be red & raw underneath. Some people just don't do it (like my aunt)...IDK why. I mean, don't we all wash our face every day? Why not clean your dog's eye boogers everyday, if they have it & brush their teeth every night too.

| Ugh ! I hate seeing and smelling eye goop. It is true that it will burn the skin where the goop sits on the skin as it grows bacteria & sometimes yeast. Often dogs will rub their faces on the floor to try & remove it themselves as it burns & itches and can cause eye infections. Ask her if she would let you put acid on her skin & not wash it off so she can get a feel of how it feels , to just leave something on her skin that burns & itches. I'm betting her answer wil be No Way. |

| It doesn't make any sense to me why she wouldn't... It's easy to do and takes, what, like 30 seconds per dog? I have to clean Billi's eyes each day- wet a cotton ball and swipe a tiny comb through... Couple seconds per eye maybe? If it's easy and quick to do, prevents infections and keeps our babies from experiencing skin irritation, then why in the world wouldn't we do it??
