Default Rude Man at Vet Office Today

I wanted to share this with you all because I had a run in with a guy at my vet office today that made me upset. I have to say that I contained what I really wanted to say very well . . .I just counted to 10 in my head and went over words before they came flying out of my mouth (a very difficult task for me)

Anyways, Rhianna had her rabies vaccine today and I use a soft sided pet carrier to transport both my dogs in. I feel they are safe in the car and safe being inside a vet office where there are large dogs just on leashes. I protect my fur kids from coming into contact with other dogs that may be ill, or like I said, larger dogs who I don't want them to come nose to nose with.

So I'm sitting there minding my own business when this guy looks over and was staring at the carrier and trying to see what was in it. Usually people will look and say "oh how cute, is that a yorkie", etc . . but NO, not this guy . . he rudely said "what's in there a cat?" I said no, it's my dog and then he said "that's for cats, not dogs" "that isn't right your dog is trapped in there" Really?? I calmly said, Sir, my dog is safe in there and feels more secure and less nervous . . .he shook his head and gave me this look like I hated my dog, was abusing it and that I was cruel . . .

I really disliked my vet visit today . . .

Some ppl a pet carrier is for whatever type of pet you'd like to put in it. I've seen ppl carry turtles in the smaller ones. The man was just being a butthead and his opinion was unwanted and unnecessary. Kudos to you for controlling your tongue many people(myself included) may not have had the same type of restraint.

There seem to be lots of rude and stupid people out there!
Cali is small and the big dog owners are Lways making cracks about her being a mouse or a ferret. Like you I done let her on the floor or around the possibly sick animals - I chose to not expose her, plus Cali is reactive if she feels me tense up and she wants to fight everyone - all 3.5 pounds of her. She was the sMe way in doggie school - if everything was calm, no problem, but if it gets tense she is ready to rumble

I just feel that I have to protect them is all . . .you know when you walk into a vet office there are all kinds of dogs big and small on leashes and I just don't feel comfortable walking them in with their harness on . . .and most of the larger dog people let their dogs go to the end of their leash to smell other dogs and that makes me uncomfortable . . .the last time I was holding one of them while waiting our turn, a larger dog was allowed to get close enough to sniff . . .my immediate reaction was to stand up . . .the woman said "oh he's friendly" yah until he makes one of my dogs his snack . ..

Good for you protecting your pup. Even if the larger dog is friendly he/she may not be properly trained or the owner may have little control. My bulldog is the sweetest thing ever but she still doesn't know her own strength and has to be watched like a hawk when interacting with Rasta.

Props to you for restraining yourself!

Other than for an annual exam (possibly with or without vaccine boosters), the times I'm at the vet are when ZoE is sick or I think there's something wrong with her. So, it makes sense to me to keep your dog(s) away from all other animals at the vet's office, as most are probably ill or sick with something.

It reminds me of taking my kids to the pediatrician when they were young and seeing all those snotty-nosed sick kids in the waiting room playing with the office toys. eek! I'd never let my kids touch those germy things!

That guy was ridiculous.

I'm lucky, my vet is pretty good about enforcing the rules, dogs must be on leashes, other animals in carriers, and keep your animal and yourself away from the other animals.

I keep Lola on my lap because of germs and I know she'll approach the other dogs in a very hyper way.

Mom2 ....the guy might have been a little "off". Best not to take insensitive remarks serious.
And is your baby sore from the rabies shot?
Did you need to do anything special ?
I have to soon too. And hear they get really sore like a tetanus shot for us.

I'm the same way, always take my pups in a carrier to the vet to keep them safe. It's one of my pet peeves, people who don't control their dogs in the waiting room. Sometimes it's a big dog, with a small kid holding the leash, and not in control.

As far as stupid rude comments, I had Kayla and Karlee both in one carrier, and a guy said "what have you got in there..... oh a couple of ankle biters", and I just responded yeh and they are really vicious.

Some people are just plain ignorant and stuff rolls out of their mouth without any thought. You can't fix stupid, so I've heard. So I don't let it get to me.

I have to say Rhianna is a trooper at the vet. She doesn't flinch a muscle or make a sound, even when they take her temp . . .even the vet tech was like "wow she didn't make a sound"

On the other hand, Brody whines and cries like a baby with the temp and after getting shots he is tender and sore.

Each one is different . . .

Trust me if I could take my large dogs into a vet in a carrier I would. Why? because people cant or won't control their dogs, and that includes small dog owners! Also because of risk of infection.

Personally I don't give two damn figs, if some-one thinks I have a cat in a carrier or my Yorkie. So I don't get insulted, and if I don't want to answer the question I don't.

I also feel many reception areas in vet offices are very poorly designed. Not enough space to keep dogs away from each other. Even on very short leads!

There should be a spacious area for ingress and egress throughout the reception area. No seating area in front of the reception where ppl have to pay the bill while keeping their dog on lead. At an emergency hospital when I took my dog in for emergency treatment and had to pay on the way out; I was focussed on paying the bill, my large boy was at heel and at a sit, when another dog seated behind me, lunged forward to greet or what-ever my dog. I was pulled off my feet by my dog who turned to meet the lunge and protect me. Very poor design. And yes the lady who had the Malamute could have had a shorter lead on her dog, but she was also pulled out of her seat when her boy went for mine. I held onto Magic and issued sternly his STOP command but he was very agitated, I was on the floor and vulnerable, but I would not let go of his lead.

What I think should happen is that a separate exit area is designed where you pay your bill on the way out. That should insure one on one bill payment with no other dogs or ppl present.

My vet's office is like that. You go in the front door, and out the side door, past the cashier window...which is in the same office space as the front counter. The seating area is away from the front 'entrance' counter, too...and it is a small veterinary building...just well designed. I think the only reason to take a dog on lead to the vet is if it is too big for a carrier and/or for the owner to carry. I couldn't care less what someone else 'thinks' is in my carrier...that baby is going home with me anyway, so only ONE opinion matters...mine!

Of course, I don't let my Yorkies touch the floor/ground in most places I take them anyway...too much dangerous stuff they might come in contact with being that close to the floor/ground, and no way could I beat them to it if they found something they wanted to sample. Plus, whatever they walk on, they will lick off their paws...ick...so, no...I carry mine.

That was a close call with Magic, and both you and the other owner could easily have been injured...glad you are okay.

I am sorry that guy gave you such a bad time. Not only can you NOT fix stupid, it is often impossible to avoid it!
