Train Yorkies to sleep in their own bed I inherited my mother's 2 precious 8 year old Yorkie sisters 2 months ago. They have always slept snuggled close to her. My husband loves the girls, too, but their scratching & snuggling wakes him AND me all during the night. I'm allergic & back on antihistamines. How can we train them to sleep in their own bed? Crate? We are trying to resolve their itching using anti itch oatmeal shampoo & conditioner & their diet. Tempted to give them children's Benadryl! My Mom was use to their nights with her, but we need help & these sweet girls do, too! Thank you for helping!

I have had the most luck with a grainfree single protein (fish) food with lots of probiotics and a good moisturizing shampoo (minksheen) and double rinsing after their weekly bath. My very allergic daughter has very little problem if we stick to this regime . Not much help on the bed sleeping, mine have been crated at night since puppies.

| I think crate training is a good idea. Start with putting them in there for short amounts of time and feeding them in their crate so they associate it with good feelings! I put Cherry's Himalayan chew in her crate and she willingly goes in there to gnaw on it.

I put Jess in a medium size crate at night I my daughters room. She has enough space for a big bed and a pee pad. She snuggles right down if Sami is in the room with her. If she is on an overnight at a friends we just drag the crate to one of my other daughters rooms. Two of us are allergic but after about 6 months we both built up a tolerance and she doesn't bother us anymore allergy wise. Jess is a scratcher so I cant help you there..

Gizmo has skin issues too and we go organic grain-free diet and then I puncture and squeeze a pill of fish oil on his breakfast each morning the fish oil is good for their skin, hair and heart. Gizmo is too smart to take pills he will peel cheese off the outside and he doesn't seem to mind the taste when I put it directly on the food. Again I am no help since mine sleep in bed too

My boys sleep in my bed so I don't have too much advice. I tried to crate them, but I just couldn't do it. I know some dogs prefer to sleep in a crate, but my little guy hates being caged. I'd say introduce them to the crate during the day and slowly... Last edited by theporkieyorkie; 10-23-2013 at 08:10 AM.

I crate mine, but they weren't enthused with it at first (I tried the suggestions here, such as putting them in for short periods while they could still see me, putting food/toys in there, etc). What worked for us was putting the crate on the night stand beside my bed so they were still right beside me. After about a week there, I moved the crate to the floor, but still right beside the bed (I'd let them see my fingers hanging down through the bars before I turned the lights off. I'd get a couple of kisses from them, then they'd lay down) I only left it there a couple of nights and then started inching it into the position I wanted it in a little at a time. It took about 3 weeks to get the crates where I wanted them but they were ok in their crates the first night. I tried to move too quickly one night and my littlest one let me know that wasn't ok! lol I got mine at different times, so it was probably easier than it would be for you, if you're planning to crate them separately. I wouldn't have room to do that with 2 crates. But maybe you can crate them together at first? Get them used to the idea and then separate them, if they'll allow you to.

For Charlie we just got him a really comfy bed, made sure he had a warm blanket, and a teddy bear. Then we just closed our door. He whined for a bit the first few nights, but by the 4th night he had learned "go to bed" and off he went ! It was hard those first nights when he whined, but we just let him do his thing. I think the first night he whined for about an hour and then he fell asleep Good luck !
