| Family member gave dog pork Not sure if this is true or not, but I heard pork is bad for yorkies and can cause Pancreantitis(?) While eating dinner with my Family, I noticed my Grandpa kept giving Zoey pieces of meat. I didn't think much of it at first, I'm a vegetarian so I wasn't eating the meat..from a closer look, I then realized it was pork chops. I told him not to give her any because pork is bad for yorkies and he just said "Oh no it's not" ignored me, and kept giving her pieces. GRR.

| Your pup should be fine from such a small amount given. Just watch for anything out of the normal. You should possibly consider crating during dinner time. That way there is no other worries.! : )

| I like Buffy's idea of crating your pup during mealtimes. Try to work on educating grandpa, especially if he is around Zoey a lot and/or lives with you. Pork is not okay. Does he have prior experience with small dogs? Yorkies are at great risk for pancreatitis, which can be deadly. Also, Yorkies are a lot smaller than the average dog and can easily be overfed. Even if a dog appears to tolerate a food one day, the problems may not show up right away if the dog continues to be fed the wrong things.

| There are some pork based dog foods on the market but they are limited and usually mixed with other proteins as well. I believe the association with pork and pancreatitis is the high fat content of pork. Pancreatitis is an accute and scary and if a dog has an episode their diet is changed for life (and you are lucky indeed if a diet change is all ya need!) and low fat is a primary part of that. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Though I love to get lilah a fatty pig ear now and again I make sure to mix it up with veggie chews, bully sticks, cow ears, denta bites smoked bones and other not super fatty chews for treats and usuall stick with lamb, fish or poultry protein for her base food. We eat grain free too and use legume instead of potato more often than not to avoid a consistently high glycemic index (and hopefully diabetes!). Long of the short is she s probably alright but probably shouldn t make it a habit

| I had a dumbazz give one of my babies years ago, ham pieces under the table.....I am surprised she didnt kill my little girl. She gave her a slice of ham the size of your hand, tiny pieces at a time....and my little girl did fine. It is absolutely NOT what I would suggerst, and believe me, I went crazy when I discovered what was going on under the table, and I worried myself sick for the next couple of weeks. Now my little dog was not very picky and did not have GI issues....as a matter of fact, she didnt even develop diarrhea.....but from THAT day on, I ALWAYS crate my dogs when company comes over....it is better for all of our nerves.....the dogs relax quietly in my bedroom, away from all the noise and jerks that think it is funny to "feed the little piggy as much as she will eat" to see what will happen! |

| THis summer we went for a family reunion and shared a lake house with an uncle and his gf. He told me he had never seen a dog that wouldn't eat grapes. Oh my I went off, we had a discussion about that. I did apologize to him, but I also informed him that grapes are toxic to dogs especially small dogs. |

| I really feel bad for some of the things that Megan got fed, but she lived a long 15 years, when she wasn't supposed to live out her 1st year. When we got Gina, my mom asked if we were going to feed her table scraps, we told her no, and my wife made a Gina safe list of foods that she could have, and a no no list of foods she couldn't. I put Gina in her x-pen, while I'm cooking and we are eating, it's safer for both of us with all of my physical issues. Zoey is your baby, and you have every right to dictate what she can and can't have, and make sure everybody who comes over, or lives there, knows and follows your rules. I would explain the reasons why, and crate her during meal times, to prevent any accidental or purposeful feedings. Good luck. Cheers Quad

| For starters read the lists of toxic/poisonous foods, plants & meds here (especially the 3rd post re: foods). Print it for the whole family and get them to understand that even small amounts can make them very sick or die. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/eme...oods-misc.html Also print a list of safe foods for treat. Grandpa can give her green beans, carrots, small bits of apple, a few Cheerios, etc. instead of meat bites. I understand that people want to give treats, so make sure they are the right ones. Another thing, tell everybody who has access to your pup that giving her bad things could make her very ill and end up with vet bills in the hundreds or thousands of dollars. So whoever gives the treats should be made responsible for those bills if they insist on giving them bad stuff.

YT 1000 Club Member | If your grandpa doesnt want to listen to you in regards to not giving Zoey pork/table scraps you may just want to crate her when y'all eat meals. I get a bit "witchy" when someone gives something to one of my dogs after I tell them not to... |
