| Newbie here.... Hello to all. New member from Chicago suburb. I just picked up Miclo on Friday. He is about 7 weeks now and am a new pet owner. I am feeding him Blue Buffalo small breed food. I have had to hand feed him and add a little bit of boiled chicken in order for him to eat. Is this okay? My question is: how often and how much should I feed him? He hasn't had any of his shots yet. Will be visiting the vet sometime this week. Any ideas on potty training? Any input would be appreciated. Take it easy on my guys, I'm new at this. |

| God he's adorable. Don't forget to get some NutriCal and read up on hypoglycemia with a pup so young. It's probably not good for him to be outside until getting his 3-4 rounds of puppy shots. With that said, the pee pad is probably the way to go. Give your boy enormous praise when he goes to the bathroom in the right spot; it really is critical to making them want to go in the right areas that you make it feel really good for your boy to do so. Potty training can be very difficult with yorkies, and until the last month and a half (my girl is about to turn 6 months) there were lots of times I was pulling my hair out at the potty training lol! Welcome, and don't forget to keep updating us with pics of Miclo!

| Hi, welcome to YT. My only advice is that I would free feed a baby that young. Was there a reason that he had to be taken from mama so early? You will need to be vigilant in watching for hypoglycemia. YT is a great place to learn how to be a wonderful pup-parent!

Thanks for the info. I will read up on the topic. I have been taking him outside to poop, but I won't anymore. Hopefully no harm has been done. Any idea on a vaccination schedule?

I am free feeding him now, but he won't go near the water or food bowls. Not unless I carry him and feed him with my hand. He was taken from the mama since she wasn't feeding anymore and the owner had an emergency trip to Florida. Hypoglycemia, have anyone here had a (bad) experience with this? Btw, my name is Danny, and thanks for the welcome. Will keep updated with pictures.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk, your little Miclo is darling. Since you are new, you might not have seen some of the wonderful information in the YorkieTalk Library, so I'll include a a link here to one particular sticky that is full of info for new puppy owners. | My Gizmo was going into a hypoglycemic coma when I rescued him, so that would be the top of my list of things to watch for, Gizmo was 9 wks old. Make sure to check his gums several times a day, to make sure they are nice and pink as that is one of the first signs. Also at that young of see if their is a puppy replacement milk powder that you might be able to mix with water ad maybe mix a little with his kibble to make it easier for him to eat plus get those extra nutrients mama would have still been providing. I feed gizmo royal canine yorkie puppy food, and he loves it. I also still give him it moist with water for breakfast and dinner, then let him free feed as much as he wants during the day. Also I use potty pads, and learned really fast that Gizmo thought they were delicious lol, so I bought potty pad holders that clamp them down, and no more eaten potty pads :-) Gizmo was very comforted at night when I would cover his crate on 3 sides to make it feel like den to him. I also put one my shirts for my smell in his bed, and I put soft music on for him to calm him. He has from the first time he slept a night here, slept through peacefully and has never cried. He is adorable xoxo |

| 7 weeks is pretty young to be away from the mamma. On top of the Royal Canine Yorkie puppy, Royal Canine also makes canned food for mom and puppies(it comes in a white box with 3 cans)...it's like a whipped mouse and is easier for them to eat. You can find it at Petco or Petsmart. You can also try baby food(like people baby food) if he won't eat the other things you are trying. You definitely want to be careful about taking him outside or any place until he has his shots. Potty pads would be the best way to go. I wouldn't even take him to the pet store or to the dog park or anything until he sees a vet and has his vaccinations. Even when you are at the vets, I would be very careful and not let him run on the floor at the vet and i would even bring my own towel to put down on the table to put him on for the vet to examine him. I know that I may sound a little paranoid, but I am saying this because puppies are very vulnerable at a young age...esp before they have their shots. You could pick up parvo, coccidia, or a variety of other contagious diseases that could be deadly to your puppy. I know breeders that won't even let people in their houses until their puppies are of a certain age and have been vaccinated. Hope the above helps!! As far as the potty training goes, I have heard that Yorkies are in the top 5 for hardest dogs to potty train and I believe it. I think some are much better than others. Both of my dogs go outside to go potty...most of the time~but we still have occasional accidents. One of the best investments I made this year was one of those little green machine carpet cleaners!! If I ever get a yorkie puppy in the future, I will be litter box training it instead. Welcome to YT and welcome to yorkie parenthood. Someone once told me that yorkies are like potato chips and that you can't just have one!! It's SOOO very true!! You'll find that they are very addictive!!
