| 9 year old Yorkie lived outside most of it's life We have been asked to take on a Yorkie. Do you have advice, for introductions to our spoilt 6 mth old Yorkie, and questions I should be asking. He's thought to be blind in one eye. I asked about his teeth, injections, house training, meals and sleeping habits. So his owner is taking him to the vet to get him injections, he apparently hasn't been having them, as he never left the garden (no walks). She will also get his teeth scaled and looked at, while at the vets. He's spent most of his 9 years living outside with another dog, that dog recently died, and he's been inside recently. He hates cages and crates, I'm guessing because he's been caged for most of his life. He sleeps anywhere he's put. -( I hope he'll like my bed, if Caleb is ok with that.) We plan on taking him for a few days, on trial basis, to see if he will be happy here, with my two and us. I can't imagine a Yorkie living outside, Our Caleb shivers already, when out. He goes and gets his top and gives it to me to put on him. Just hoping this dog has a double coat. We've not even met him yet, and he's breaking my heart to think of his life so far. He's neutered.

| I don't have any advise but my heart's breaking for this 9 year old little guy! Thank you for offering to take him in. I'm sure it will be quite an adjustment for him and your other two. After reading other stories of rescues being taken in, it may take more than a few days for everyone to be happy. Praying for you and that this little man has found his furever home. |

| You lovely person, I hope the trial period goes well. I'm sure he'll have loads of adjusting. I think your common sense will come into play here, gentle introductions, let him find his way around and what he's comfy with. My neighbour fostered two Bichon's and is adopting one, she was a delicate wee thing in the beginning and adapted very quickly. Now she's a loving fluffy beasty. Lots of gentle touches and pure love is probably the best thing for him |

| This story makes me so sad, poor lil guy. I'm so glad he might get to live the rest of his years in comfort & happiness with you. You're a real angel if you're able to take him in. I hope he fits right in with your clan!

| Bless you and bless his little heart. Rescues take a lot of patience but they are so loving when all is said and done. Funny thing Laddy doesn't take to other dogs at all but with Lolita he accepted her from the moment she came to us. It was like he sensed that she needed us and him. Will be praying all goes well for you and him.

| Hopefully, since he's been living with another dog, he will enjoy being with your little one. If you haven't introduced them yet, I would say the best place to do so first is on neutral ground...in other words, not in your house or at the house the other dog was living at...so neither of them feels threatened that the other is invading their territory. I would also keep both dogs on a leash at first....that way you can control the situation easier, if anything should happen. This gives the dogs a chance to meet without the additional external territorial to see how they get along with each other on equal ground. When I let dogs meet for the first time...I don't let either one of the dogs dominate the other by jumping on the other dog and I don't let either dog get too aggressive with the sniffing. Bigger dogs will literally bulldoze Ricky and lift his rear legs off the ground, if i let them. Whenever I let another dog in my house, I usually put up a baby gate in between my boys and the other dog at first...so the other dog has time to sniff around and everyone has a chance to calm down before being together. Too much excitement can bring out aggression in some dogs and it definitely does in my older male. I also make sure I pick up toys, chewy's etc etc....because sometimes dogs can get possessive over their food and toys. I also monitor playtime and food time closely...to make sure nobody invades each others space. I also think one of the best things you can do for your dogs to get them to get used to each other is walk them together as a pack!! I am currently babysitting a dog and walking him with my dogs literally changed his behavior. Before I walked them together, he looked at my little 4 lb dog like prey, like a squirrel or rabbit....and now he sees him as a pack member. I am guessing you are probably going to see a big difference in energy levels between your 6 month old and the 9 year old. Hopefully, the 9 year old will become a good role model for your puppy...and I am sure he will be so grateful to have a nice warm home this winter!! IMO, anyone who keeps a yorkie outside in the winter is crazy. They don't have undercoats like other dogs do....so they get cold much easier!! A lot of people thing dog clothes are just for "looks," and sometimes they are...but for our breed in particular, they really do need coats and sweaters to keep them warm in the winter. Good luck with the introduction!!! I am so glad you decided to take in the 9 y.o yorkie!! I absolutely love seniors, but I know re-homing them can be very difficult...so this little guy sure is lucky!! Last edited by theporkieyorkie; 09-17-2013 at 10:01 AM. |

Thank you for all the great tips. I'd of forgotten about picking up toys and chews. Had thought to go for a walk for their first meeting. Keeping leads on, when they first come home, is a good idea too. Our Border Collie is 9 also, and this yorkie's last companion was a Border collie too, so I'm hoping that helps his adjustment. Thank you EVERYONE for all the supportive comments. I too couldn't bare to think of a Yorkie outside. It made me want to give it a cushy warm life, for the rest of it's life....and had me shedding a tear at the thought of his life so far. Caleb hates the cold, until we got him, we'd not planned on having a dog, who wears clothes, but he loves his tops, when it's chilly, even goes a fetches it and brings it to us to put on. Mostly he's naked, but I can't see him wanting to going out this winter, without a dog coat on.

| My former foster dog Pearl is a 10 year old Poodle who never lived inside until she was put into rescue. Pearl is staying with me now (I am her official babysitter when her family is on vacation) and her inside habits have improved so much from when she was my foster back in May. I tell you from my experience with Pearl she followed Sophie Kate around all day (still does) and would learn by example (i.e., Sophie Kate naps, Pearl naps, Sophie Kate drinks water, Pearl drinks water). Remember be patient, show them that it is okay to explore as long as they are within the boundaries of good inside behavior.

Yes we too hope the vet check goes well and soon. Talked with hubby about added vet bills with another oldie, especially one who's been out in all weather. Our Ishmael has to have meds for achy joints, I'd be surprised if this one's joints aren't a bit sore. Today when we took the dogs out, it was 13c, I could feel the cold in my knees, can't imagine being out in it and worse, without the choice of warmth. Hope the owner gets to the vets soon, and gets back to us quickly. Will post any up dates and pic's if I get any photos, I'm going to ask for a pic.
