| Lots of advice needed new yorkie owner of a pup Hi there. I brought home our yorkie tri colour pup 3 weeks ago now. Whilst I am not new to doggies these little things are completely different to my usual choice of large dogs. .. For example.. my yorkie Tillys playmate is a great dane . My dane is gentle and loving towards her but I have so many questions, Firstly - she eats EVERYTHING! my dane did but he was big enough to pass things through and I worry 100 percent more with her being so tiny.. she brought a slug in to me last week! Second - her coat.. how long will it grow at the moment she just looks shaggy all round her face but her body isnt nearly as fluffy take a pic and it always looks short haired. Third- house training.. wow she is stubborn she is 10 weeks old and ALWAYS goes to the puppy pad to pee.. trouble is we have one in each room ... remove one and she does it on the floor... am I making good enough progress for her age or should I be looking to get her trained to go to the door by now? Also occasionally I have noticed she coughs. Not always and not every day but she does cough occasionally. Also she eats her own poop! She had a full bill of health from vet, has her second injection in week and half time she was wormed on panacur - vet asked my opinion on microchipping her and I sounded my concerns to her size and agreed to chip her at 6 months when she has her spay surgery. The eating her own poop bothers me, she will poop,,, then turn round and try to gobble it up.. Not pleasant!!! All hints and tips would be gratefully apprechiated. Also have any of you taken your yorkies to puppy classes? Tilly I have socialised round a few of my friends dogs but here im talking german shepherd, labradoor etc... I also wish her to have a social side to other mini dogs too! |

| Hi and welcome! I always had large dogs also, and I'm learning that Yorkies are very different. Our Yorkie needs almost constant supervision at 16 months because she finds the worst things to put in her mouth. Fortunately she has a routine whenever she finds something possible to eat-she throws it in the air several times then rolls on it. That gives me time to see what it is. As young as your baby is, I think that her being so consistent on potty paper is great! I would talk to your vet about the poo eating.

| Hello and thankyou for replying. I did mention to the vet in passing she poop eats. She asked what I fed her on and I explained she was refusing dog food all together and the breeder told us in event of that feed her chicken... so we had been feeding her chicken - fresh chicken brought daily and she wolfed it down.. we tried adding in dog food in small amounts but its amazing how they seperate dog food from chicken to just eat the chicken still! Vet suggested changing the puppy food. She was on pedigree puppy a food recommended that she was already on.. So we brought ceasers puppy with real carrots in and she did wolf it down and have managed to wean her off chicken and onto ceasers puppy and iams puppy kibble to compliment it. This has not stopped her pooh eating though! Its like a great game to her! Everything not nailed down is potential food to her! Im just scared im so used to big dogs i mean if my dane grabs something he shouldnt (which he has many times... quite used to finding the kids half eaten barbie doll heads in his samples he leaves in the garden luckily outgrowing it now but she is too small yet her desire to gobble unedible things seems almost ocd like! |
