| Socialization...to places? So we've had Benji for almost a month. It took him about a week, week and a half, to get really comfortable in the house and the immediate back yard. However he is SUPER nervous to go anywhere else...shakes like a leaf in the few car rides he's had. He has been afraid of the front porch, even when on my lap, shakes like a leaf (though he finally followed after me this morning and explored around a bit). Tried walking him less than a block to kids bus stop, but he literally lays down. So leash walking, or walking of any sort just isn't happening right now (bummer!). I have kind of wondered if the previous owner never really took him out of the house, or if maybe I'm expecting too much out of him. I thought he'd be excited to go for a walk outside, but he's pretty scared, so all his exercise at the moment is coming from running full speed up and down the halls from kid to kid (which is cute! lol). For now my plan is to take it in baby steps and take him out on the sidewalk for a bit at a time til he gets used to it. Any thoughts? Similar experiences? |

| Just give him sometime and he'll be okay. What I did when i got my little one who was also a rescue was to walk her on the leash in the house first. I started taking her on very short walks. At first only a few feet and the gradually increase the distance. It helped to build her confidence now she doesn't even want to come home sometimes depending on the weather. As for the shaking once his confidence is much stronger that will subside. The only time Brandi shakes now is unfamiliar places other than that, she no longer shakes at home anymore unless she is cold. Once he is feeling secure, his shaking will stop. |

| my lola will not walk on a leash......if we walk out of the yard i have a sling bag she goes in. i think she came from a puppy mill and basically left in a crate as she will do circles non stop when she is nervous or out of her element. it took me months to get her to walk in my back yard without shaking or cowering... she was afraid of every noise and everything. now she will hang out and lay down out on the grass and even sometimes play with cedric n lola. so i say build a routine and slowly get him used to these surroundings. depending on his history it can take a lot of time for them to feel safe in outside surroundings but with time and patience he should start to come around. anytime lola is afraid of something i pick it up and let her smell it or i pick her up and bring her to what she's afraid of so she can smell it if she chooses this usually helps ease her anxiety when theres soemthing outside she's not used to in the yard. wishing you the best.

| Thank you for the input! I literally spoke a day too soon. We just got back from taking him for a short walk to the end of the block and back--twice! I guess curiosity got the best of him! |
