| What size crate is best for yorkies? Hello! My name is Leslie. I am new to the site, and new to yorkies. I'm getting my first baby in about a week, and I've been looking around for a crate (mainly for training purposes). Most of the time someone will be home with her, but the crate will also need to be big enough for her to stay in on the off chance that someone isn't home to watch after her for an hour or two. I know that their adult size is rather unpredictable, but her mom is 7-8 lbs are her dad is 3 lbs. I'm planning to train her to potty outside, and she'll need to sleep in the crate at night at least until she's pretty well potty trained. I've been looking at 18" and 20" crates online, so It's hard to judge exactly how big they would be in person! I'm leaning toward the 20" or maybe even a 22", but it would be great to have a few opinions from yorkie owners!

| We got an x-large crate. We love it. Lots of room for jasmin to move around in. She is 7.8 lbs. I would have gotten the giant size which is the biggest but DH said no plus it will be too big for our space.

First I got the Midwest Lifestages Double Door Fold & Carry Crate. 22" L X 13" W X 16" H Model 1622DD For Dogs up to 10 lbs. I then went out and got the Midwest iCrate Double Door Folding Dog Crates 18" L X 12" W X 14" H For Pets 1-6 lbs. Both come with dividers so you can make it smaller and they can grow into it. I found the smallest one is best for us at the moment for potty training. Galen is a little guy at 3lbs 9 ozs. And I still have a divider in. I would not go any bigger then the first one. Good luck in crate training. We are doing so far so good. Oh and I found great prices for them at petco. I like the double door ones.

| I agree with Verbena, You don't need anything bigger than the necessary... Especially if are trying to get her potty trained. Once trained. I think that you can go with whatever size you please.. That's what I am choosing to do. Bc Verbena is right. If it is bigger than that. Your new pup will not have boundaries and go in the crate. If it is known to be their "HOME" they will refuse to go to the bathroom in it. Hope that helps. && WELCOME to the forum & Yorkie world.!!! Congrats on your new baby... Im expected to get mine soon as well.. Please post pics when you get her... Were here to help, Feel free to reach out. : )

| Sometimes i think people confuse crate with pen. The crate is for sleeping and potty training. If you do not have your eyes on your pup, use the crate for short periods of time. After potty training outside, the pup can play in a pen (which may also contain the crate), if you cannot watch closely. And, welcome to YorkieTalk! You will learn a lot here.

| I bought the smallest crate I could, it fits both my pups, 4 lbs and 3.5 lbs. the crate is for night time and naps. It goes in their play pen which is x-large. The play pen has water, food, crate, and potty. With tarp underneath. |

| Bella sleeps in the smallest pet carrier I could find, and she still has plenty of room. It is 9" wide, 18" long, and 10" tall. |

| I guess I may be one that has done things different. I tried starting with a crate with gizmo, the extra small, but he was scared to death of it, and freaked out yelping and screaming all night. I think the girl I rescued him from was a byb, and kept him in a crate all the time because he had an awful fear of it. The next day I went and bought a large xpen for him and set it up in a rectangle instead of the normal octagon. At one end I put his potty pad then towards the middle I put his food and water, and at the other end put his blanket/bed with all his toys. He is doing wonderful in there. I have him on a schedule so he knows what to expect. When I go to bed I cover the end of his bed with a blanket to make it like a den. I also turn on mellow classical music for him as well as a night light. He has not cried once at night since. He also knows he has to take naps there during the day. He also eats all his meals in there, and is doing fairly well with the potty training. I have an exact potty pad holder outside the pen as well sohe knows what it looks like and where to go. In almost 4 weeks, he's only had 4 accidents, 2 pee ones and 2 poop ones, and they all happened under my husbands watch haha, he tends to watch the tv more than he does gizmo :-) he hasn't had one accident while he's been out hanging out and playing with me :-) the pen I have is 2 1/2 wide by 7 ft long so it gives him plenty of room, to separate each area and what is for :-) Last edited by Sunnydayz; 09-03-2013 at 07:17 PM. |

YT 1000 Club Member | There's a formulae which is recommended as a minimum, but. I'd get the biggest Crate you could fit in a convenient area. Doesn't hurt for them to have extra room. I have two 18 x 24".

| If using for potty training a crate should be as small/large as the dog is to allow for a full circle turn around. @verbena gave a very good description.

| I followed this rule also and used the divider so that it allowed just enough room for Sophie Kate to turn around. Now that she is a older and trained I no longer use the divider but I do use the crate from times when we are not home and it will be longer than 1-2 hours (Sophie Kate does not get free roam of the house when we are gone any longer for her own safety, she is kept in the kitchen area with a gate)

| We use the small plastic or shipping type crate rather then the black metal type just in case we need to leave for a hurricane -our pups are already used to them for traveling. I had the smallest size for Abby but she did not like it, she settled in much better once I bought her the same as Ziva's (A Dr Foster and Smith Pet Den-24x16x16). The Iris 36" 8 panel ex pen was an investment but well worth it, we still use it 2 years later! |

| I started out with the Midwest Crate (I524) 24"X18. It had a divider panel, so we scaled it down to fit our puppy. I kept looking at the Potty Training Puppy Apartment - but it seemed costly for it's purpose. I had to leave my baby for a weekend and I was nervous about "Daddy" waking up to take her out for her late night run - so I broke down and bought the apartment. Our baby girl LOVES her apartment - she just turned 5 months old and she tucks herself into bed at night. There's a little door in the apartment that leads to the "potty" and she figured it out on the first night. I'm a believer now! Potty Training Puppy Apartment is a great way to go. Check it out.
