| Neutered Today & Worried :/ Hello, I got my 6 month old pup neutered today. He is 3.14 lbs. He did great and when I picked him up, the vet didn't have a protective collar on him because they said "he wasn't licking." Well, when we got home, I basically kept him in my lap all evening, but there were a couple of times I turned my head and BAM, he was licking. I stopped him really fast but I hope it doesn't cause him infection. I'm just worrying myself sick tonight about it. I went by petsmart to buy a plastic collar and tried to put that on him after i caught him lick and he had a FIT. He started going crazy on the carpet trying to take it off. He got it off alright. Smart little boy. I also had him micro-chipped, esp after the incident two nights ago, he was in the back yard and got out of the fence. Luckily, my husband found him wandering and put him back in the house. If any body can reassure me about this licking, it would be greatly appreciated. Carol

| You are right. It is not ok to let him keep licking. You can try a Onesie to cover the area. Otherwise, an ecollar s necessary. They stay on better if you thread their collar through the loops.

| A little licking is not going to kill him as long as you keep an eye on him and tell him no when he does it. When you can't watch him though you need to try and find a way to keep the cone on like maybe using something to tie it to his collar.

| Don't worry. I believe the primary concern with licking is that the pup will open the incision. Does he have stitches or a glue closure? Glad surgery went well and that he is home. No one every likes the "party hat" cones.

| Thank u, this is a good idea. I don't have a onesie but maybe a large sock would work.

| When Laddy and Kyra were fixed we tried the onsie but legs were to big so we took a pair of their little pjs and put them on them backwards lol, looked funny but worked great to cover that area. Little pants would work the same way.

| Sounds just like what my vet told me with one of my cats that had gotten stitches "oh she's not licking". They will lick and especially if there is any itching going on. Hard to watch them around the clock so I agree try to protect that area somehow or you could see yourself back at the vet like I did. Ugh! Praying for a fast healing!!
