Need help with my STUBBORN boy From day one since he was a little puppy, Mocha was taken care of by both my mom and I. During the day time, grandma takes him out potty and spoil him rotten. As soon as I get home from work, he's my little boy. All the care giving immediately switched to me (potty, feeding, grooming, etc.) This seems to work until I started taking business trips. He is now almost 4 years old and very used to this routine. A few weeks ago I was out of town for a week and Mocha REFUSED to go potty with grandma after 4pm. Treats does not work, potty scented rocks does not work, nothing seems to work. Even when grandma stay up til past midnight to take him, thinking he can't hold any longer. Well, make the story short, everyday grandma would wake up finding pee and poo in his playpen, even right on his bed (and who said dogs don't do their business where they sleep?) The poor little thing just holds and holds until he cannot hold any longer. I need to go on another trip early September and we are very worried. Grandma and I started taking him out together. However, he still refused to do his business if grandma is holding his leash. Only does it when I hold his leash. I tried praising, yelling, bribing, everything. Please HELP ME!!! Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like Mocha's extremely loyal to you as most yorkies are.... Persistence and patience is the only thing as far as training goes. Are you using pee pads? If not, maybe you can expand the playpen to make enough room for a pee pad during your trip?

Thank you! I think using the pee pads will be my last resort. I still want to try to get him trained to go potty with grandma first. But thank you for the suggestion, that is a great idea if I don't succeed by my trip.

Has anyone tried the potty rock? Does it work? Maybe instead of buying that rock I just ask friends with dogs to give me rocks that their dogs pee'd on before and place in my yard. Maybe that will give Mocha the urge to mark his territory?

Have you tried working him out a bit before taking him out? I noticed with Magnus that he goes potty sooner after a workout or hard play. When he doesn't, he takes forever or at times, doesn't go and wait till I get home from work. | |
