Yorkie Yakker | My yorkie doesn't understand the word "NO." My yorkie, Guido, doesn't understand the word "NO." He sometimes barks at people when we're walking. (Especially kids/small children) He barks at the TV sometimes, and other random things that he is unsure of. He is the sweetest little thing but if he notices something/someone foreign he freaks out. He also occasionally chews the baseboards... He should be out of that stage at 9 months old I would think. I just can't seem to discipline him. If I say no in a stern voice he completely ignores me and it doesn't even phase him. How do you get your yorkies attention?

| What??? Your Yorkie doesn't understand "NO"? Lol. I have 2 with the same problem! Lol. I think it's selective hearing!! I think they are just too stubborn and headstrong! Try a squirt bottle or shaking a can with pennies in it. Get his attention with something loud, then when he looks say NO sternly. Always say NO, or the same word so he associates it to doing something he's not supposed to.

| I don't teach no instead a teach " leave-it" and "quiet" The problem with "no" is it doesn't have a direct meaning. It could mean too many things which can confuse the pup. |

| I have tried water bottles and shaking a can of pennies with no luck for my female! She's 3 now and still will not listen! Only thing that draws her attention is if I pick ip a newspaper! She barks at everything! Last edited by Kentuckyyorkie; 08-06-2013 at 06:46 PM. |

For barking, try quiet or enough! For other things like chewing on baseboards, try "uh uh uh" or making a clicking sound with your mouth. Redirecting attention is good for lots of things. Does he know basic commands like come, sit, stay? You can get his attention by asking him to perform one of these. I also withdraw attention and announce that I am leaving the room when the boys won't listen to me. I go where they can't follow.

| Squirt bottle and lots of training worked great for Callie. She knows the word no and will stop what she is doing if I say it even no matter what if I am watching her through the door while she goes out to pee and trys to mess with a bug I say no and she moves on. If a piece of food is dropped and she moves toward it if I say no she stops.

| Question: What do you do to enforce "No" when you say it to him?
