| High Kill Shelters?? How do you tell if a shelter is a high kill shelter?? I've heard lots of rescues refer to picking up dogs from high kill shelters. I would assume that most shelters labeled "Animal Control" are high kill shelters. But I've looked at other shelter websites, trying to find their euthanasia policy and some don't have it. Just wondering because I am in the process of helping a friend rescue a fur baby and he'd like to save an older dog out of a high kill shelter...one that may not have such a good chance finding a home otherwise. |

| Oh, it's even worse than that... For $10 they'll euthanize any owner-surrender at the owner's request. It's a cheap way for people to get rid of any pets they no longer want. It costs more to place an ad looking for a new home for them in the local classified newspaper than it does to have your pet willfully killed. It's beyond disgusting!

I've heard that...and you can't even be with your pet while they are doing it, so the last few minutes of your pets life are spent alone and scared. Boy isn't that worth saving some money I am down in the Dearborn area...and WOW...is the Michigan Humane Society you are referring to the one in Detroit, MI?? For some reason, I pictured the Humane Society being a low-kill shelter. I am definitely going to be keeping an eye out at those places and will forward it along to my friend. I swear we've viewed some animals on Petfinder from Genesee County Animal Control. We tried to get a labradoodle out of Animal Control on Friday in Wyandotte, but he was already adopted out...which is good news for the pupster. | |

Senior Yorkie Talker | This makes me so sad and angry to read...In the UK from what research I have done NO shelter/rescue centre put a healthy dog to sleep, they even work spending time with dogs who have behavioural issues to try and resolve them. The only reason a dog will be put to sleep is if they are unwell or they are a dangerous vicious dogs

| Seeing these numbers makes me even more glad that my local shelter is a no-kill shelter!

If I ever win the lottery, I swear, I'm going to open an animal refuge! Bring me all your pets! Animals in this world shouldn't have to suffer because of our actions: lack of spay/neuter, etc.

| Happy Ending.... We did it!! After months and months of looking, I helped my friend adopt a dog out of the Michigan Humane Society in Detroit today. Thanks to the high kill shelter list that kazzyk810 told me about, it made the decision of where to adopt, much easier. I went in yesterday and checked the puppster out and I had put a $20 hold on him because my friend was working....I also notice he was coughing and sneezing so they were going to check that out. We went in today to finalize the adoption and he was supposed to get neutered on Monday and come home on Tuesday, but because he has upper respiratory, he actually got to go home today. I figured that is what would end up happening, but I thought we were going to have to fight with the humane society to get them to postpone his neutering until he gets better. Thank goodness they let him heal up first. At one point, I was considering volunteering there...but after today, I just don't think i could do it. Out of the 3 hours we were there, we were the ONLY ones adopting an animal out, but there were people coming in left and right to surrender their animals...and there were loads of people coming in to pick up free dog food too. So...the new doggie is now at Petco, shopping for all of his new goods!! This is at least the 3rd owner he's had in 4 years and this time he finally lucked out as he is going to be very spoiled in his new furever home! |

| Congratulations! What kind of dog did your friend get? My daughter volunteered at our Humane Society in high school (back when she thought she wanted to be a vet). There were so many dogs. The older dogs especially got looked over in favor of young puppies. She found it heartbreaking when old dogs surrendered by their owners after so many years, sat their maximum 30 days with no one wanting them (or less when they were filled to capacity) & were then euthanized.
